A Los Angeles institution since 1990, Options for Recovery/Stork Club offers outpatient-based substance abuse care for women, with a focus on those who are pregnant or already mothers. The organization is part of the Los Angeles Biomedical Research Institute and is based at the Harbor-UCLA Campus in Torrance, California.

Treatment and Staff

Clients who attend the Options for Recovery/Stork Club program are typically a mix of self-referring and court-mandated. The most comprehensive program offered at the facility is its Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP), which features a busy schedule of group and individual therapy every week day. Typically, sessions last from 9 am to 3 pm Mondays through Wednesdays, from 9 am to 2:10 pm on Thursdays and from 9 am to 12 pm on Fridays. Clients can also expect breakfast and lunch each day of treatment, a rare perk among outpatient facilities. While the counselors (comprised primarily of LADCs) emphasize CBT and an assortment of related therapeutic methods, clients can also expect a heavy emphasis on 12-step recovery with meetings held on-site once a month. There is no dual diagnosis component to the program at Options for Recovery/Stork Club though clients in need of services for co-occurring disorders can be referred to an accommodating facility.

This speaks to one of the chief features of the program, which is its comprehensive case management services. Thus, in addition to their regular therapy, clients can expect individual family services, crisis management, in-home parenting education, relapse prevention counseling, care coordination with other agencies and assistance in accessing transportation to the facility.

The IOP at Options for Recovery/Stork Club is long-term in nature, typically lasting one year, with clients transitioning to a more standard outpatient schedule towards the end of their time in the program. Following this, aftercare is offered in the form of continued group and individual sessions held once a week for six months.

Extras

Options for Recovery/Stork Club provides free daycare for clients with children under four years of age.

One advantage of sharing a location with the Harbor-UCLA Medical Center is that clients can expect medical services through the OSAM Clinic (Obstetrics for Substance Abusing Mothers), which includes testing and treatment for STDs, perinatal care, fetal monitoring, childbirth education, drug testing and post-partum care and general medical care.

In Summary

Potential clients considering the Options for Recovery/Stork Club program can count on an outpatient program that is both comprehensive and long term, featuring CBT-informed care with an emphasis on 12-step recovery. Furthermore, those participating in the program can expect a host of additional services, including case management, child care and medical services designed to address the special recovery needs of women.
