Founded in 1996 by Dr. Davida Coady, a physician who specializes in substance abuse, Options Recovery Services offers an affordable Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) in Berkeley, California. Treatment uses both the 12 steps and evidence-based practices. In addition to the IOP, many community resources are available, including case management and options for transitional living.

Treatment and Staff

The Options day treatment program is a year-long IOP designed for those who need a high level of care. Treatment begins with an initial assessment, where treatment goals can be mapped out. The program consists mostly of group therapy, with individual counseling available on a case-by-case basis. Dual diagnosis support is provided, but detox is not.

Topics addressed in group therapy include 12-step education and study, behavioral modification, relaxation training and techniques, self-esteem, anger management, smoking cessation and relapse prevention. When it comes to outside 12-step participation, clients are urged to attend AA/ NA meetings during their free time. Though individual counseling sessions aren’t always available, each client has a primary counselor who tracks his or her progress during the program.

Groups held during the days are gender-specific. The women’s program meets Mondays through Fridays from 8:30 am to 11:3o am at the Oakland location, and 1:30 pm to 4:30 pm at the Berkeley location. Men’s groups meet Mondays through Fridays from 8:30 am to 11:30 am at the Berkeley location.

Walk-ins are accepted for intake appointments. Women may show up for a walk-in intake at 1 pm and men at 8 am.

There are also evening options for those enrolled in school or who work during the day, but these groups are not gender-specific and the evening program has less hours of treatment per week. Sessions are held Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 5:30 pm to 7:30 pm.

Staff members include LDACs in addition to a physician. There are approximately 10 staff members to each client. Groups are typically limited to 10 people.

Extras

Acupuncture and yoga classes are offered two times a week. Clients are encouraged to engage in positive activities like exercise and meditation to help cope with uncomfortable emotions or urges to use.

Aftercare groups meet Wednesdays from 8:30 am to 10 am or 5:30 pm to 7 pm.

Transitional housing is offered for men who complete the year-long outpatient program. Other services offered to clients include money management, shelter referrals, educational assessments, literacy tests and health screening referrals.

In Summary

For those looking for an outpatient program that uses both 12-steps and other therapeutic modalities, Options Recovery Services may be a good choice. With a strong staff and a variety of resources, clients are fully supported as they transition into a sober lifestyle.
