Options Family and Behavior ServicesThe Basics

Located in Burnsville and Roseville, suburbs of Minneapolis, Minnesota, Options Family and Behavior Services is a chemical dependency program for teens that also treats mental health and neurological issues. Options started in May of 1998 as a way to respond to the needs of the community and was the first to provide CBT specifically for adolescents in Minnesota. The founder and program administrator, Brian P. Sammon, firmly believes all substance abuse treatment programs should follow evidence-based practices.

Treatment and Staff

Options offers adolescent chemical dependency services, home-based mental health assistance, clinic-based mental health assistance, dual diagnosis treatment, behavior analyst services and independent living skills. The facility follows evidence-based practices and uses a person-centered approach when determining each client’s needs, strengths and goals.

The substance abuse program for adolescents implements a structured recovery environment that focuses on abstinence-based skills, healthy social contacts, healthy support groups and an understanding of triggers and relapse prevention. The clients in the adolescent day treatment are broken into four pods, which consists of 11 to 12 individuals each. These pods are made up of clients who have similar diagnoses and designed to create an environment conducive to peer support. The program consists of individual therapy, skills groups and a school component where students are able to finish their classes while receiving support and treatment.

Options’ therapists offer support for co-occurring disorders by combining mental health and substance abuse counseling experience in a measured environment. The facility offers individual therapy. In the adolescent day program, the amount of individual sessions depends on the level of crisis of the client. A therapist can be chosen outside of Options but that’s the family’s decision. Options does have a doctor on the premises for medication management and it also has a medical clinic subcontracted through the Livio Health Group to offer services such as blood work, pregnancy tests and STD testing.

The clinical staff consists of a director of services, an in-clinic psychotherapist, an assessment and referral supervisor, a day treatment therapist, a psychotherapy supervisor and a day treatment mental health practitioner. This is in addition to therapists, behavior techs, psychotherapists, LCDCs and psychotherapists consultant. The staff’s credentials include MFT, LADC, LICSW, LPC, MSW, Licensed Graduate Social Worker (LGSW) and Board Certified Coach (BCC).

In the adolescent day program two staff members—a lead therapist and a co-therapist—per pod. There are chemical dependency counselors and two behavior techs for this specific program.

For adult substance and alcohol abuse treatment, Options refers clients to its recently acquired facility, River Ridge Treatment Center in Burnsville.

Extras

Options also offers family therapy in which therapists are trained to encourage families to use healthy problem solving skills. The therapists are trained in working with alternative family units and individuals of all ages.

The facility also offers a Parenting Skills Program at the Burnsville location designed to empower parents and guardians struggling with adolescents that have challenging behaviors associated with their chemical or mental health issues. The program meets twice a week for a total of nine sessions.

Telepsychiatry is also offered, which is psychiatry over the phone. There is also an aftercare program that Options refers to as graduate day treatment, which is an hour and a half class that helps clients stay sober.

In Summary

Options Family Behavioral Services is a facility that not only treats adolescent chemical dependency and substance abuse, but also mental health and neurological issues. It is unique because of the school component and that it offers services to clients from the time they enter the premises to the day they graduate the program.
