The Basics
Located in Indianapolis, Indiana, Options Behavioral Health Systems is a private, lock-down psychiatric hospital that provides a range of short-term inpatient programs for adolescents and adults. Though not suitable for clients who are primarily just substance abusers, treatment is offered when chemical dependency is a co-occurring disorder. Clients with a primary mental health diagnosis receive treatment in one of the relevant acute inpatient treatment programs for adolescents, adults or seniors.
Accommodations and Food
The 84-bed facility combines clinical services with residential, striving for a home-like environment. Dual-occupancy rooms are furnished with twin or hospital beds, depending on the services. Though the facility provides a large gymnasium and learning center, furnishings are very basic. A variety of fresh, hot meals are served in the cafeteria. Hospital staff prepares all food and while dietary restrictions can be accommodated, meals are not cooked for individual tastes.
Treatment and Staff
The dual diagnosis program is offered for adults who have a mental health disorder and secondary diagnosis of alcohol or benzodiazepine addiction. Men and women aged between 18 and 64 can be admitted, and treatment is typically three to 21 days. The individualized program utilizes an interdisciplinary approach, employing nursing, psychiatric and counseling staff.
A medically monitored detox service can be completed on-site before beginning treatment. This process typically lasts five to 10 days, during which clients are monitored and supervised around the clock. Once completed, clients can officially enter the dual diagnosis program.
Clients attend group therapy daily, with individual sessions scheduled with their clinical team several times throughout their stay. Process groups encourage conflict resolution, goal-setting and help develop problem-solving approaches to issues. Psychoeducation and client-led groups also occur each day, with activities therapy each afternoon. Clients also receive continuous psychiatric evaluation and medication management, both aimed to provide stabilization. Master’s-level therapists are trained in trauma-informed care and incorporate this with CBT and DBT.
Extras
As part of the individualized program, clients may participate in family therapy, with family and the referring parties are provided additional weekly updates. Chronic pain management, mental health skills development and recreational therapy can also be incorporated. Crisis Prevention and Intervention (CPI) is utilized, as are other de-escalation techniques, as all staff is trained in these areas. All clients receive a discharge plan that includes a schedule of outpatient therapy and follow-up appointments.
