Located about 45 minutes from both downtown Los Angeles and Malibu in the suburban city of Woodland Hills, California, Optimum Performance Institute (OPI) is a treatment facility that specializes in the care of clients aged 17 to 28 struggling with an array of mental illnesses like bipolar disorder, depression, anxiety disorders, OCD as well as substance use and eating disorders. Accommodations and Food
Situated in the quiet town of Woodland Hills, OPI is a great fit for those in the arts and entertainment communities. With only 25 to 30 clients at a time, the facility fosters an environment of both privacy and community. Residents stay in a world-class, luxury apartment complex located one mile from OPI’s treatment facility. Clients are not required to drive, as the facility provides all transportation. The building boasts plenty of amenities including spacious common areas with flat screen TVs, large work-out rooms, two swimming pools, computer rooms as well as outdoor lounges and grilling areas.
While the building is co-ed, males and female live in separate apartments. Peer support and community are a key aspect to recovery at OPI. To this end, every resident shares an apartment a bedroom with one roommate. The apartments are equipped with comfortable furnishing and a washer and dryer. While visitors are not permitted for the first month, every client is required to keep a cell phone at all times so that parents are able to stay in touch.
For residents of the OPI residential program, food is provided, and every resident is involved in meal planning and preparation. Nutritionists are consulted, especially in cases of eating disorders.
Treatment and Staff
Clients beginning treatment at OPI first undergo a comprehensive assessment to help the staff develop the most effective action plan. As every client is unique, OPI offers highly customized care programming tailored specifically to meet the needs of the individual. While the length of treatment varies depending on the specific needs and progress of the client, residents typically stay between six and nine months.
OPI treats young adults with a vast array of conditions including mental illnesses, trauma, learning disorders and substance use disorders. To this end, the facility utilizes a layered treatment approach that integrates a range of therapies including evidence-based methods, 12-step recovery, holistic methods, life coaching and psychoeducation.
Residents participate in two individual therapy sessions a week, a psychiatric consultation twice a month, daily group therapy, twice a week individual life coaching and weekly apartment meetings. Clients receive around-the-clock staff support and are in constant contact with independent living specialists for progress reports. Much of the group therapy is performed using DBT and CBT, and clients engage in a multitude of holistic activities like expressive art, tai chi, yoga, mindfulness meditation and qi gong. Specialized groups focus on topics including perfectionism, nutritional counseling, goal setting, social and life skills as well as body image and grocery shopping for those with eating disorders. For individuals with substance use disorders, the OPI team will drive them to local AA or NA support meetings.
The OPI team is comprised of a multidisciplinary staff including Master’s-level therapists, case managers, psychiatrists and nutritionists. For individuals with co-occurring disorders, dual diagnosis support is available. The intensive residential program offers a one to two staff to client ratio, and the standard residential one to six.
OPI’s specialized Roanne program for individuals with borderline personality disorder was named “Best in Treatment” by Psychology Today.
OPI also offers fun activities like an improv group, cooking classes, a music jam session and dinner outings.
