The Basics
Since 1979 Open Paths Counseling Center, based out of Culver City in Greater Los Angeles, California, has offered affordable counseling services for men, women, children and families, in both English and Spanish. Open Paths offers a series of group sessions that address a number of mental health issues, including depression, anxiety, grief and loss. Open Paths is a safe place to explore behavioral health concerns through culturally sensitive approaches facilitated by experienced therapists.
Treatment and Staff
Open Paths has a series of group therapy options that are offered during the day and evening to accommodate clients’ work and home schedules. Some of the group offerings are gender-specific while others are co-ed. Incoming clients can come into the facility on their own terms or through referrals. There are also a number of court approved classes offered at Open Paths designed to fulfill any court requirements that the individual has to complete.
There are two groups specifically for women that meet once a week in the evenings—the sexual trauma group for clients who have experienced seuxal assault of any kind, and the women’s empowerment group, which is specifically for clients who have had violence within a relationship. Another group that meets on a regular basis is the social anxiety group, which is a co-ed session.
Court ordered counseling services includes a 10-week parenting class that focuses on giving parents tools for better communication and parenting skills. This is a certificate program that’s presented to the court upon completion. Another specific program is for clients who were convicted of domestic violence and have to complete a class as part of their probation. This group meets weekly for 52 weeks and also culminates in a certificate. The domestic violence track can also provide individuals and couples with counseling and offers guidance and therapy to help end the cycle of violence.
Other specialty groups include the LGBTQ community, ongoing anger management classes, and an outreach program that works with adolescents through their schools. Therapeutic approaches utilized at Open Paths include CBT, DBT and EMDR.
The counselors are usually graduate students who are supervised by Master’s-level therapists who are LPC, LMFT and psychologists.
Extras
Open Paths is a training center for therapists and has a clinical training program.
All programming is offered in both English and Spanish.
