Open Door Recovery Center

Open Door Recovery CenterThe Basics

About 30 miles south of Bangor, Maine, Open Door Recovery Center was founded in 1984 by local recovery advocate Bill Hills. The facility offers outpatient drug and alcohol treatment to both adolescents and adults in the small town of Ellsworth. Open Door’s primary offering is an Intensive Outpatient (IOP) program designed to help people build a 12-step-based foundation in recovery that will empower them with tools to maintain sobriety after they leave treatment. Detox treatment is available in conjunction with nearby Maine Coast Memorial Hospital, but dual diagnosis support is not offered.

Treatment and Staff

Those requiring detox services are first referred to the local Maine Coast Memorial Hospital. Inpatient detox can last between three and seven days. Detox treatment allows clients to withdraw from alcohol or drugs comfortably with medication assistance. The length of detox depends on each client’s specific needs.

The 12 week IOP treatment program begins with an evaluation by an LACD.  Individual counseling is offered once a week along with group therapy three times a week for three hour sessions. There are specialized IOP tracks for both adults and adolescents. Both groups address relapse prevention, addiction education, how to handle stress and anger management, and building coping skills. Participation in 12-step meetings is mandatory. Clients are expected to attend three meetings a week. The central tenets of AA and NA are reinforced and taught in groups at Open Door.

Open Door staff includes licensed drug and alcohol counselors. The staff to client ratio is low—about two-to-one.

Treatment at Open Door includes six months of aftercare group therapy. Making post-treatment plans is a big part of recovery at Open Door. In addition, family programs are offered, which include individual counseling and group sessions for clients’ families. These groups take place once a week for one-and-a-half hours.

Open Door also has specially-trained counselors who are skilled at helping veterans with substance abuse issues and the families of veterans. The facility is dedicated to helping those with military backgrounds feel comfortable in a treatment center.

Sober living is available at Open Door’s Hills House for women with children who need a place to stay as they complete treatment. Once treatment is complete, Open Door will provide resources for clients to find permanent housing by working with officials of Hancock County.
