open-armsThe Basics

A longtime fixture of Rockland County, New York with origins dating back to 1979, Open Arms offers sober living to men and women. Both residential homes are located in the town of Haverstraw and feature corresponding programs.

Accommodations and Amenities

Open Arms’ facility for men is a sweeping boarding house that can accommodate 18 clients at a time. Residents either share a room with one roommate or receive their own room, a privilege earned over time and through exemplary conduct. There are two shared bathrooms on each floor, as well as one on the main floor that also features a kitchen, dining room and large common area.

The women’s house, located a short walk away from the men’s, can accommodate 12 clients who share rooms equipped with twin beds and basic furnishings. There are also shared bathrooms off the hallways and corresponding common rooms.

Throughout the week, dinners are prepared by a rotating shift of residents as part of their weekly chores; clients typically take care of their own breakfast and lunch, as well as all meals over the weekend. Clients are aided in procuring food stamps, if needed.

Rules and Regulations

In addition to a strict no-violence and no-theft policy, clients can also must submit to random drug screenings with a zero-tolerance policy for a failed test. Additionally, there is no smoking on the grounds— a policy the program is extremely strict about. In fact, any clients who smoke must be enrolled in a smoking cessation during their residence. Furthermore, all residents must be attending outpatient treatment during their stay and Open Arms recommends four local programs to choose from.

Treatment is supplemented by regular on-site group and individual therapy, led by two staff CASACs, as well as on-site 12-step meetings and transportation to other local meetings. Clients participate in morning meditation groups and monthly groups dedicated to nutrition education. As time in residence continues, residents develop a stabilized routine and are assigned a case manager to help them find employment, housing and educational opportunities.

While the length of stay varies, Open Arms welcomes clients for long-term stays with some extending their time up to a year, provided they continually meet the requirements. Given its emphasis on community involvement, Open Arms strives to maintain a continuing relationship with its alumni and invites them to attend 12-step and peer support meetings at the house after they graduate.

Extras

As mentioned, Open Arms strongly encourages clients to quit smoking during their stay and even holds a weekly tobacco recovery group to aid in this end.

In Summary

With a long history of providing a stable environment for newly sober clients, Open Arms is a valuable resource for those in the Rockland County area who are transitioning to outpatient treatment while still in need of a structured, recovery-oriented home.
