Olympic Recovery Center Review

Located just west of Olympia in Lacey, Washington, Olympic Recovery Center provides long-term residential substance abuse treatment for men and women. Offering gender-separated treatment, Olympic also provides detox services and transitional housing options for clients. With a network of recovery centers in Washington that includes Sound Recovery Center, Olympic has the ability to accommodate clients requiring all levels of care for any length of time.

Accommodations and Food

Olympic Recovery Center serves about 60 clients at a time. Typically, there are around 10 clients of each gender in each of the three phases of treatment, and all share a bedroom and bathroom with one other client. The residence is large and well appointed, with stylish yet comfortable furnishings. Each room has ample bedding and storage space, while the common areas include TVs, meeting rooms and meditation spaces.

All meals are provided and prepared by staff. Food is nutritious and adheres to the dietary requirements determined in each clients nutritional counseling sessions. Processed and stimulating foods are restricted.

Treatment and Staff

Though detox is not offered on-site, clients that require medically monitored detox are cared for at a neighboring facility. All arrangements are made by Olympic, and they ensure a smooth continuum of care as clients are transferred into residential treatment. Upon admission, individualized treatment plans are created. Treatment consists of three phases, each of which lasts for 30 days. As clients progress, additional privileges and freedoms are allowed. Initially, clients are supervised 24/7 and not allowed off-site without a staff escort. Eventually, clients are given permission to attend job interviews or important appointments alone.

Group therapy occurs daily, with gender-specific sessions available. Small process groups are also suggested, and are aimed at building peer support and trust. Clients use these groups to discuss concerns, progress and emotional issues. Targeted focus is given to relapse prevention techniques, anger management and stress relief. All clients participate in nutritional counseling, as diet and exercise are considered essential components of recovery at Olympic.

Individual therapy and case management services occur weekly. These may discuss aftercare planning, as well as long-term sobriety plans. The aim of both group and individual therapy is to help clients understand the relapse process, manage emotions, learn healthy boundaries and communication, learn how to avoid high-risk situations and triggers, deal with guilt and shame and to handle social pressures. Help managing post-acute withdrawal and dual diagnosis support is also provided. While staff does not offer medication management, referrals to mental health specialists are made, and prescribed medication is allowed on-site.

Additionally, 12-step meetings are held on and off-site, and attendance is suggested. Life skills training and vocational support teaches clients vital skills that help with education and employment prospects. Clients may also choose to participate in family counseling. Loved ones are encouraged to attend family sessions, as well as participate in workshops and education lectures open to clients.

Staff consists of credentialed chemical dependency professionals, with Master’s-level therapist and medical doctor in contracted positions.

Extras

Adventure therapy occurs weekly, and clients have the option to experience fun outings that build self-esteem and teamwork. Yoga, workouts and mindfulness meditation are part of the holistic treatments offered.

The extended care program begins after the client completes 90 days of residential treatment. The program includes many of the same therapeutic modalities, with greater freedom provided the client. The safe, supportive and structured environment is desirable to those wishing to ease the transition to independent living.

In Summary

Olympic Recovery Center provides services for chemically dependent clients in a long-term residential environment. The three-phase program allows clients to reduce to shock of returning to their lives. The small groups help clients find support from their peers, build bonds and commit to treatment. While the flexibility of treatment options may not suit all, the variety and versatility makes Olympic an attractive, reasonably priced choice.
