Olympia House Review

Located in Petaluma, California in the Bay Area, Olympia House is a small behavioral health facility offering programs to clients struggling with addiction and co-occurring disorders. The organization is CARF-accredited and facilitates treatment in several intensities. In addition to its outpatient and Intensive Outpatient Programs (IOP), the facility also provides an intimate, residential treatment option for adult men and women.

Accommodations and Food

Olympia House is a secluded, rural facility situated on 140 acres of wooded countryside. The home has a total of 32 beds available in both private and shared, gender-separated rooms. All the bedrooms have a rustic feel to them, each with twin beds, end tables, dressers and closet space.

Other amenities at the residence include on-site laundry, walking trails, common living areas with couches and cable TV, an exercise room and a fully-equipped kitchen. There is  also a volleyball net in the expansive backyard.

Residents are served three meals a day plus snacks by a team of in-house chefs. Because the facility is on so much land, some of the ingredients used in the cuisine are grown fresh on-site.

Treatment and Staff

Before beginning treatment, all clients go through an intake assessment to help staff members develop their care plans. While detox is not available on-site, those in need can get referrals to nearby facilities. Once stabilized, residents begin a structured regimen of group and individual therapy rooted in evidence-based practices including CBT and DBT. Dual diagnosis support is also provided, including medication management as necessary. While not a 12-step-based program, Olympia House supports a number of peer support groups including LifeRing, SMART Recovery, AA/NA and Refuge Recovery; many of these meetings are hosted on-site. Some basic 12-step recovery principles may be covered during group sessions. Other topics covered include anger management, life skills and relapse prevention techniques. Days run from roughly 8:30 am to 8:30 pm, with more flexibility on the weekends.

The staff at Olympia House consists of psychiatrists, LMFTs, doctorate-level psychologists, case managers and additional support staff.

Extras

In addition to the clinical approaches, the curriculum also includes holistic treatment such as yoga, Qi Gong, equine therapy, art therapy, music therapy and mindfulness training. The facility also has clients participate in community agriculture by helping tend to the gardens on-site.

Vocational services and flexible case management are also provided for a number issues, namely to help clients find housing and a place in the workforce upon discharge. As a form of aftercare, clients can attend stepped down outpatient therapy through Olympia House.

In Summary

Overall, Olympia House is a well-rounded organization with thorough residential treatment plans for both men and women. Treatment plans include evidence-based practices, holistic methods and dual diagnosis support to help clients heal on all levels—all at a competitive price point. For those in the area looking for a peaceful place to get intensive care, Olympia House’s residential programs are worth considering.
