The Basics
Recovering addict Nick Jones and Mark Harris, a local pastor, founded the non-profit Old Pueblo Community Services in 1996 in Tucson, Arizona. Jones, a Vietnam veteran, had been homeless and served time in jail. These life experiences inspired him to help homeless vets and those being released from prison with nowhere to go. Besides sober living, Old Pueblo Community Services provides outpatient substance abuse treatment services, home ownership programs and veterans assistance.
Accommodations and Amenities
Old Pueblo Community Services accommodates up to 300 people in 11 sober living facilities, including the Casa Santa Clara For Men, Oasis House for Women and the Veteran’s Assistance program. Residents share rooms in furnished housing units that include Wi-Fi and fully equipped kitchens. Clients purchase their groceries and prepare their own meals. Smoking is permitted in designated areas outside the houses. No candles, incense or pets are allowed. In addition, coffee pots must stay in the kitchens.
Rules and Regulations
Prior to admission, prospective residents fill out an application form. If accepted, the next step is an intake interview. Clients are assigned case managers. Certain medications are not allowed on the property, and those requiring medication management must consult with their case managers, prior to seeing a psychiatrist. The length of stay is 90 days. The curfew is set for 6 pm for those who are unemployed. Working clients have a 10 pm curfew Sundays through Thursdays, and an 11 pm curfew on Fridays and Saturdays. Household chores are assigned and rotated on a bi-weekly basis.
Clients must be fully clothed at all times. Since house managers perform bed checks, clients must wear pajamas or a t-shirt and shorts. In addition, all residents must sleep in their bedrooms. Those who are caught sleeping in common areas are called out. Disrespectful language or sexual activity is forbidden. Those are grounds for immediate dismissal, as well as suspected drug and alcohol usage.
Clients must attend 12-step meetings or SMART Recovery on a regular basis. In addition, the acquisition of a sponsor or a mentor is required within two weeks of admission. Old Pueblo Community Services offers outpatient substance abuse and addiction counseling which includes group therapy, individual therapy and peer support groups.
Extras
Old Pueblo Community Services provides a variety of additional services for at risk populations. They work with an Arizona housing agency and helps clients enrolled in New Chances (an employment assistance program) find additional six-month housing. The Men in Transition program helps men get jobs. Uniforms and bus passes are provided. Casa Mariposa is a separate house for female victims of sexual assault, domestic violence and rape. Free rent and counseling are provided.

Those who have no other options can find hope through Old Pueblo Community Services, but they have to be willing to do the work. Co-founder Jones, who often appears on the properties with his friendly Rottweiler Zeus, is enthusiastic about helping clients rebuild their lives. Old Pueblo Community Services offers a plethora of comprehensive and compassionate services for financially challenged clients in recovery.
