Olalla Recovery Center Review
Located in Olalla, Washington, Olalla Recovery Center is a residential recovery facility for men and women that uses holistic and individualized treatment practices. Olalla integrates both the 12 steps and evidence based therapy methods into peer-driven recovery programs.
Accommodations and Food
Men and women are accommodated separately on Olalla’s 12 acre campus. In all, the facility can accommodate up to 47 residents in dorm-style rooms. All clients share double-occupancy bedrooms, though men are sometimes housed three to a room. Bedrooms come furnished with full beds, dressers, upholstered chairs and closets. All are spacious and decorated colorfully. The bathrooms are communal, with two stalls and a shower. The women’s dorm is the smaller of the two units and has just one large bathroom shared among 11 clients, while the men’s has three.
There is a large main building where classrooms, meeting rooms and a large dining room are housed. Meal times are staggered to accommodate the men and women’s individual treatment schedules, with genders eating separately. The women’s side features a quiet reading area and a patio with seating facing the heavily-wooded campus.
The property also has a jogging trail, picnic tables and sitting areas available where clients can work on assignments, socialize or meditate. There are various recreational and exercise activities scheduled, including weekly yoga classes.
Residents are not allowed to bring personal electronic devices, though the facility does have a TV room used for movie nights or watching sporting events. There is also a basketball court, horseshoe area, crafting area and volleyball court. Board games are also available on-site to play during downtime. The cafeteria-style food features fresh prepared meals daily and offers a variety of choices. Lunch and dinner always have a salad bar as well as home-style food options.
Treatment and Staff
The programming offered at the facility includes an array of treatment options. A typical day involves clients waking up early for breakfast, cleaning their personal spaces and making their beds before a community meeting to discuss the day’s schedule. Residents may be asked to do morning chores before attending a group meeting or lecture before lunch, followed by one or two more group meetings before the end of the day. In the evenings, clients attend a community AA meeting.
Upon entering the program, therapists and clients establish goals and plans for treatment. Though the program typically lasts between 21 and 28 days, some residents stay for up to 90 if they feel their goals were not met within that time frame. The facility incorporates a range of treatment methods including 12-step, CBT, behavior modification techniques, EMDR and literature from Terrance Gorski incorporating the Gorski Relapse Prevention Technique.
Group therapy and classes also cover topics like relapse prevention, personal health, nutrition, stress coping skills and holistic healing options like acupuncture, meditation, reiki, Native American teachings and spiritual circles. Clients receive individual therapy as well, usually once a week, to discuss continuing care options. Clients who enter into treatment with co-occurring disorders are provided medication management services. Staff are available 24 hours a day on-site including Master’s-level chemical dependency counselors, psychologists, LMFTs and peer counselors.
Extras
Family members are welcome to visit clients every Saturday to participate in group therapy sessions with their loved ones. The day lasts from about 1 to 4 pm and includes dinner for those who wish to stay. Aftercare planning is also available and generally means moving to a sober living facility or an outpatient program in nearby Gig Harbor.
