The youth residential program through Odyssey of Auckland, New Zealand caters to adolescents between the ages of 13 and 17 who have had problems with drugs and alcohol, have been in trouble with the law or have co-occurring disorders. The youth program includes substance abuse counseling, therapy to improve their communication and emotional skills, and continued education services. These residential programs through Odyssey are only available to those who are from New Zealand or those who have permanent residency.
Accommodations and Food
The youth residential facility offers comfortable, spacious and home-like accommodations on a campus that takes up over five acres of land. There are fully furnished, semi private bedrooms as well as a large dining room, recreational areas and living rooms. Also on the premises is a full registered school where young clients attend classes on a daily basis in order to keep up with their studies.
Balanced, healthy meals are all prepared and served on-site. Additionally, residents can expect cooking and meal prep classes as part of their treatment.
Treatment and Staff
During their time in treatment, the adolescent clients learn how to make healthy choices, and focus on their education, life skills and recovery. There are several group sessions every week along with at least one individual session. Additionally, Odyssey works closely with other agencies that provide medical and psychological assistance. Every young client has an individualized therapeutic and educational treatment plan to suit their needs. There is also dual diagnosis support, including medication management.
A large portion of treatment for adolescents at Odyssey is teaching the importance of self care and wellness. There are several life skills classes and experiences clients partake in, which include cooking classes and recreational therapy. In addition, there are relapse prevention groups as well as groups that address anger management, communication and aftercare planning.
The rather large staff at Odyssey is made up of teachers, mental health professionals and social workers.
There are specialty groups for young clients who are children to parents with chronic mental illnesses. To ensure success within this program, family involvement is a critical element. Family visitation is on a weekly basis, and clients are also able to go home for visits as well. There are also regular community dinners for clients and their families.
A program known as Stand Up and Amplify is designated for young clients and teen parents through partnered schools within the community. It’s for young adults who are looking to challenge themselves and set goals.
A vocational training program specifically geared toward youth at Odyssey is the Odyssey Cafe that offers real life work experience.
