Odyssey is a not for profit addiction and co-occurring disorder treatment facility located in Auckland, New Zealand. It offers comprehensive programming that is based on the therapeutic community model. Odyssey offers adult residential programming that includes group and individual therapy, educational groups, cultural activities and extensive medical and psychiatric assessments. Since Odyssey was founded in 1980, it has helped thousands of New Zealanders beat their addiction to drugs, alcohol and gambling.
Accommodations and Food
There are four residential treatment facilities for adults. The primary location in Auckland serves parents and their children so that they can stay together as clients go through the program. The other residences are dedicated to young adults in their 20s and those with co-occurring disorders. These addition houses are located within Auckland and Whangarei, and the main facility is set on over five acres of land.
The residential facilities are placed within homes that provide semi private bedrooms, lounges, shared kitchens and yard space. There are also on-site swimming pools and gyms.
Clients have some meals prepared for them and some they make for themselves. All food is included during their stay.
Treatment and Staff
The adult residential main program is the family program where families stay together as the parents attend treatment. During treatment clients receive psychological and medical assessments and services regularly, attend several group therapy and precaution sessions per day and revive vocational training and parenting classes. For adults in the dual diagnosis tracks, they also receive medication management services and treatment designated for substance abuse and mental illness.
In some cases clients show up at Odyssey in need of detox. Though there aren’t detox services offered on site, the staff is able to set the process up with the client and a partnered agency before they begin the residential program. There are also several therapeutic cultural activities, relapse prevention, and skills training. Another essential element to the success of clients at Odyssey is the expectation of accountability within the client community, and a support network within the program of peers.
The staff of Odyssey consists of over 140 people dedicated to helping their clients learn how to live in recovery. This includes medical doctors and nurses, addiction specialists and drug counselors. Odyssey’s programs are only available to the people of New Zealand.
There is a specialty program for young adults who have been incarcerated for drug charges that runs for about three months, and offers educational and vocational training skills in addition to durg treatment. The residential facilities grounds has tennis courts and a soccer field.
There is a family program that includes counseling sessions and monthly community dinners. The aftercare program consists of continued life skills training and therapy sessions.
