New York City’s Odyssey House is a non-profit network that was founded in 1967 by psychiatrist Dr. Judianne Densen Gerber. Created originally to be a drug-free alternative to opiate addiction, Odyssey House has evolved into a social service agency offering various substance abuse resources, including residential and outpatient treatment and sober living. Odyssey House’s outpatient facility serves men and women in the Bronx.

Treatment and Staff

Odyssey House’s outpatient program offers a flexible schedule during the day and evening and includes bilingual support. Its focus is helping clients maintain sobriety and improve overall health, as well as enhance their home life, career and education goals.

Clients are first assessed by a counselor and then have a program crafted to meet their individual needs. Individual, group and family therapy uses evidence-based practices, such as MET and CBT.  Groups vary in size are are mixed gender, covering topics like trauma, recovery and personal empowerment. Life skill training—such as managing emotional stress, health education, parenting skills and anger management— is also a significant part of treatment. The overall general length of the outpatient program ranges from three to 12 months.

Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT) is available and uses naltrexone for opioid abuse and Campral and Antabuse for alcohol addiction. Twelve-step recovery principles are not necessarily incorporated into treatment but clients are welcome to attend AA/NA meetings if they wish.

Clients with a  dual diagnosis receive additional support through individual sessions with a psychiatrist and medication management.

Staff includes full and part-time medical, clinical, recovery and administrative staff including CADCs, LADCs, CSACs and LCSWs.

Extras

Odyssey House Recovery Oriented Care System is a program that connects alumni to clients for ongoing support and coaching.

If eligible, Metro Cards are provided to cover a transportation to and from treatment.
