Odyssey House Christchurch Review

Odyssey House Christchurch is based out of its namesake, Christchurch, New Zealand. Originally established in 1980, Odyssey House offers a number of services, including a men’s only residential program that addresses addiction and co-occurring disorders. Treatment is comprised of group and individual therapy, psychoeducation, some 12-step support and SMART Recovery. Odyssey House gives clients a safe place to acquire life skills and learn how to stay sober.

Accommodations and Food

The men in the residential program live in a home-like community that can accommodate up to 16 clients who share bedrooms and house responsibilities, like daily chores. The facility provides all the essentials, like furniture and toiletries, and is in a safe and quiet residential neighborhood that has a nearby park and sports/recreational center.

Good is included—some meals are prepared by staff, and some are made by the clients themselves. The meals are, for the most part, healthy, though clients do have some say in what they’d like to eat.

Treatment and Staff

Incoming clients must be at least 17, and meet the DSM four criteria for substance abuse, which is only provided through a referral. There are structured treatment days and consistent drug screenings that are performed on a weekly basis. Upon arrival all clients are matched up with a “buddy,” who is a current resident, and helps them through their first two days in the program.

A typical day begins with an early morning wake up, around 7 am, and is followed by a series of therapeutic activities and counseling. There are daily exercise sessions, two house meetings per day and ample time for vocational training as well. Clients are responsible for keeping the residence tidy and are given regular jobs, like washing dishes or vacuuming, every day. There is at least one group session per day, and an educational class or lecture. Additionally, clients do have some free time, and can have visitors once a week on Saturday afternoons.

Treatment uses evidence-based protocols, like CBT, Stage of Change, behavior modification, supportive therapy and psychodynamic therapy. For those clients who are in need of an opioid withdrawal maintenance program, Methadone can be prescribed and managed by staff.

The staff is made up of alcohol and drug counselors, nurses, LSWs, teachers and peer support.

Extras

In addition to substance abuse treatment, residents also partake in a number of building projects through Odyssey House as well. The clients receive a weekly stipend for personal items that is part of the cost of treatment and supported by the ministry of health.

There is a monthly family program that offers group therapy. There can also be individual sessions with the client and family if needed.

In Summary

Odyssey House of Christchurch provides a gender-specific program within a therapeutic community of like minded individuals who learn how to support themselves and each other. The focus is to encourage a change in one’s lifestyle and way of thinking, which in turn hopefully fosters a healthy and productive life outside of addiction. Odyssey House is a solid resource for men in the Christchurch community.
