Odyssey House Academy is the adolescent residential treatment program within Odyssey House Louisiana (OHL), a non-profit addiction treatment program in New Orleans founded in 1973. As as a satellite location of the original Odyssey House in New York, OHL was founded by Dr. Judianne Densen Gerber as a drug-free alternative to opiate addiction. It offers a detox program, short-term residential program, an Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) with long-term housing and Odyssey House Academy.

Accommodations and Food

Odyssey House Academy serves boys and girls ages 13 to 17 years old. The dormitory-style residence can accept 16 clients with double-occupancy bedrooms and a shared bathroom. Clients have monitored and limited TV watching privileges and there is a classroom with a computer and Internet access, but it is available for educational purposes only. Clients have the privilege of one weekly phone call with the opportunity to earn extra phone time during the weekends; this is also the time when visitors are allowed. Exercise isn’t built into the program but outside recreational time is built in to the day’s schedule. Opportunities for extracurricular activities and outings are available based on the client’s behavior and progress.

Food is provided in the the form of prepackaged meals delivered to the program.

Treatment and Staff

Treatment follows the Matrix Model, approved by SAMHSA, and length of care is contingent on the needs of the client. Individual and group therapy uses a combination of  talk therapy and the 12 steps. Clients with a dual diagnosis are welcome to receive treatment as long as substance abuse is their primary diagnosis. Life skills are supported through the therapeutic community model. Detox is not offered here.

The daily schedule follows a basic rhythm of a 6:30 am wake-up and 9 pm lights-out on the weekdays, extending  to 10 pm on the weekends. In between meals and chores, clients attend individual and group therapy, educational instruction and AA and NA meetings. Educational services are provided year round and instructors are in contact with the clients’ schools and teachers so they can provide grade level appropriate materials. Clients are tested at admission and discharge in order to assess educational development while in the program.

The staff is mixed gender and either licensed or licensed-eligible including CADCs, LADCs and LPCs. Recovery staff, clinicians and LPNs are available 24/7 while medical and psychiatric staff are on site during the days. The staff-to-client ratio is one-to-two.

Extras

Odyssey House Academy encourages active parental encouragement. The family care consists of weekly family therapy and supports in helping the client acclimate back to family and school life.

In Summary

Odyssey House Academy is a residential and academic program that serves adolescent boys and girls ages 13 to 17 with treatment for substance abuse and addiction.
