The Basics
Located in Orange County, California, OC Sober Housing provides gender-specific sober living homes for men and women in recovery. Their mission is to provide a supportive, open-minded community setting where clients learn how to make worthwhile choices with their lives, while working on recovery. While they are 12-step based, weekly meeting requirements vary according to each client’s work schedule and other commitments.
Accommodations and Amenities
At OC Sober Housing, there is a female-only house located in Mission Viejo. The men’s house is in Laguna Hills. The women’s house has a 12-bed capacity, but typically there are about seven clients. The men’s house holds between eight and ten clients. Clients are paired in double-occupancy rooms, which include twin beds, a closet (which fits no more four suitcases of clothing between two roommates) and a desk with a lamp.
Clients are responsible for their own groceries. Ample pantry space is provided for food storage. Food is prepared in fully equipped kitchens. Amenities include a private swimming pool (men’s home), charcoal BBQ, HDTV, Wi-Fi, a fitness room in both houses, laundry facilities and a two minute walk to public transportation. Each house has a resident manager.
Rules and Regulations
Potential clients undergo phone and in-person interviews to ensure that OC Sober Housing will be a good fit. While they prefer clients who have been clean and sober for at least 30 days, the minimum admission prerequisite is that clients have completed detox and have seven days of sobriety.
Requirements for residents include attending meetings, being at the house meeting, participating in an outpatient drug rehab program and working or looking for a job. The amount of weekly meetings is not mandated, but typically an unemployed client attends daily meetings while a working resident participates in four weekly AA/NA/CA gatherings. The curfew is 10 pm seven days a week, but house managers work with clients who have conflicting work schedules.
Random drug and alcohol screenings are conducted to ensure a safe and sober household. Since OC Sober Housing has a zero tolerance policy, clients who have relapsed are required to leave the premises for two weeks. After that time, if clients demonstrate a serious intent on staying clean and sober, they are allowed back into the house. The men’s house does not interact with the women’s house.
Extras
OC Sober Housing is a member of the Sober Living Network, Orange County Sober Living Coalition.
In Summary
The house for women is gorgeous. With a lake backdrop, the atmosphere is set for serenity and an opportunity for women to focus on their recovery. The men’s house boasts the huge pool. Both houses have staff that work hard to provide support to clients, and to make sure that their journey through recovery is a smooth one.
