OATSThe Basics

OATS Family Center is an outpatient facility based in Heyburn, a small town in southern Idaho. Offering substance abuse treatment to both adolescents and adults, OATS (Opposites to Addiction Therapy Services) combines their own philosophy with traditional therapy. Clients work with counselors to create a solid foundation for long-term recovery.

Treatment and Staff

All potential clients are interviewed by an intake counselor to ensure that OATS treatment is a good fit. Individuals who require a medical detox are referred to a local facility. If a client is ready to proceed with recovery, they are formally assessed and an appropriate individualized treatment plan is established. Clients in need of dual diagnosis support are assisted by counselors specializing in co-occurring disorders. Treatment duration is determined by the recovery plan.

Upon admittance, clients may enroll in either Level One traditional outpatient treatment or Level Two treatment, an Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP), depending on the suggestions of their counselor. OATS’ adolescent program typically meets at night, allowing students to maintain school obligations. Parents are given monthly progress reports.

OATS uses a unique “Opposites of Addiction” philosophy—a three- phase system based on behavioral progress. The first phase, Addiction Skills, defines negative behaviors acquired during active addiction as “skills”—these include lying, cheating, stealing, yelling and violence. With treatment, these behaviors are transformed into Sobriety Readiness Skills—truthfulness, selflessness, gentility and listening. By the final phase, Principles of Sobriety, behavior reflects the positive results of recovery—humility, serenity, language, forgiveness and helping.

All treatment is a combination of individual and group therapy led by licensed substance abuse counselors or recovery coaches (who are much like sponsors). All therapy sessions use CBT and Motivational Interviewing (MI). Clients are also encouraged to attend 12-step meetings or Celebrate Recovery groups to develop a sober fellowship.

A range of enrichment classes are offered throughout the day including life skills, health, parenting, relapse prevention and anger management. Clients are also expected to give back to the community through volunteering.

Extras

A weekly aftercare program led by OATS alumni is available every Tuesday night at 6 pm. Sober members of the local community are welcome.

Other programs include a family program, parenting classes, monthly on-site dinners and community activities.

In Summary

OATS Family Center offers a unique individualized approach toward treatment of addiction using a combination of its own three-phase behavior modification model, special interest classes and traditional individual and group therapy. With recovery coaches, weekly alumni meetings and family and community involvement, OATS understands the importance of fellowship and recovery for the whole family system. This comprehensive southern Idaho outpatient facility is ideal for clients with a high risk of relapse.
