OaklawnThe Basics

Oaklawn Psychiatric Center in Indiana provides outpatient services for adults and adolescents seeking treatment for substance abuse issues and co-occurring disorders. With locations in Elkhart and South Bend, Oaklawn Psychiatric Center has been serving residents in both St. Joseph and Elkhart counties since 1962.

Treatment and Staff

Oaklawn offers an eight month Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP), and the first step towards treatment is an assessment by a licensed psychologist. Eligible clients are assigned a primary counselor who creates and individualized treatment schedule.

Treatment includes co-ed group sessions limited to 10 people using the Matrix Model of recovery and CBT. IOP clients meet three days a week for a total of 11 hours, with one hour devoted to individual therapy. Group topics include coping skills, peer support strategies, communication skills, identifying triggers and specialized groups for those with co-occurring disorders. Dual diagnosis clients are seen once a month by a psychiatrist for medication management. Women who prefer a gender-specific treatment track are enrolled in the women-only IOP. All clients receive weekly urinalysis testing. Clients wishing to participate in a specialized group for marijuana addiction use Motivational Interviewing (MI).

The Adolescent Substance Abuse Program (ASAP) for clients between the ages of 13 and 17 is also eight months in duration.  Group sessions are two hours long and are held twice a week, with an additional hour for individual therapy. ASAP group topics are similar to those in the adult sessions, with the addition of art therapy and family dynamics. While family therapy is not required, participation by parents or legal guardians is strongly encouraged. As with the adult groups, size is limited to 10 people.

All groups are facilitated by a MFT, a Master’s-level therapist or a CASAC. While the treatment team at Oaklawn does not promote any particular support group, clients are encouraged to find outside support systems and are introduced to off-site AA/NA and Celebrate Recovery meetings. Those who have completed the eight month program are eligible to participate in Oaklawn’s continuing care program, which holds groups on relapse prevention, setting goals and peer driven discussions.

Extras

In addition to Oaklawn’s IOP for substance abuse, treatment is available for process addictions such as gambling. Clients requiring this additional care receive psycho-education and are connected to community Gambler’s Anonymous meetings.

As a community leader in mental health and addiction care, Oaklawn provides services for a wide range of individuals, including a specific program for the Amish. With both short and long-term residential treatment for men and women run by Amish in Goshen, all educational and programs individual and group therapy sessions are conducted in Pennsylvania Dutch.

In Summary

Oaklawn Psychiatric Center offers outpatient substance abuse and co-occurring disorder treatment for men, women and adolescents in two locations with extended hours. With traditional therapeutic services that use both CBT and the Matrix model, this IOP is an affordable choice for evidence-based substance abuse treatment. Staffed by seasoned and well qualified professionals, the Oaklawn program is a good fit for those who require a structured treatment plan that allows them to continue meeting work, educational or life obligations.
