The Basics
Oakland Psychological Clinic provides outpatient substance abuse services for adults and adolescents. It has been helping individuals and their families since 1983 and has expanded in recent years to eight locations in the vicinity of Bloomfield Hills, Michigan, making treatment convenient and accessible to residents of southeastern Michigan.
Treatment and Staff
The first step for those seeking substance abuse-related counseling is an assessment facilitated by a therapist. Once a client is deemed eligible for treatment, they are assigned a therapist for weekly individual sessions. While OPC does not offer group therapy, they do have a family program and clients are encouraged to participate with their loved ones. Adolescents under the age of 14 are required to include parents or legal guardians in treatment. Family treatment is available to immediate family and/or significant others and focuses on processing the effects of addiction. Discussion topics include family dynamics, addiction studies, peer pressure and setting goals. The client is present for one family session per month.
Therapy sessions use CBT and focus on addiction studies, peer pressure, identifying triggers, relapse prevention, managing stress and coping skills. Additional topics include depression and anxiety, anger management and parenting skills.
As each client is assessed individually, duration of treatment is on a case-by-case basis. All individual sessions are facilitated by Master’s-level addiction therapists and CADCs and family sessions are facilitated by an MFT. Outside support groups are highly encouraged and information on AA/NA and Al-Anon meetings is provided.
Individuals with co-occurring disorders who require medication management are treated by a staff physician. Clinic hours are from 8:30 am until 8:30 pm Monday through Thursday and 8:30 am until 5 pm Friday and Saturday. While not all chemical dependency counselors have extended hours, the staff makes every effort to accommodate each client’s schedule.
