Step ForwardThe Basics

Oakland County Community Corrections Step Forward is an outpatient substance abuse program for adult men and women ages 17 and older. With two locations in Oakland County, Michigan, Step Forward is for individuals who have been court ordered to attend treatment for drug and alcohol related infractions. Since its contract with the state of Michigan in 1994, Step Forward has offered non-violent offenders with a therapeutic alternative to serving time in a correctional facility.

Treatment and Staff

Eligible clients must have a court order to enroll in treatment and the infraction must be a misdemeanor. A counselor facilitates the initial assessment after which the individual is assigned a primary counselor with whom they meet a minimum of once per week. Once a rapport is established, the primary counselor will assign the client to appropriate groups and outline a therapy schedule.

While Step Forward does not have an Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP), each client is assessed on a case-by-case basis and those requiring more individual or group sessions will be accommodated. Group sessions utilize a CBT approach and specialized topics include women’s-specific issues, a young male offenders group, relapse prevention, domestic violence, anger management and dual-diagnosis support. In addition to group therapy, Step Forward provides case management services.

The duration of outpatient treatment depends on the court order; however the average length of treatment ranges from six months to one year. While Step Forward does not advocate for any specific outside support services, groups such as AA/NA are highly recommended.

Group size is limited to eight and—aside from gender specific groups—all sessions are co-ed. The treatment team at Step Forward includes CADCs, case managers and LCSWs. There is also a psychiatrist on staff to oversee medication management for dual diagnosis clients.

Extras

In addition to the Step Forward program, Oakland County Community Corrections offers other substance abuse outpatient treatment programs designed for those who have been sentenced to felonies and DUIs.

In Summary

Oakland County Community Corrections’ Step Forward Program offers affordable, comprehensive outpatient substance abuse treatment for individuals who are facing legal issues associated with drug and alcohol abuse. First-time and non-violent offenders will surely find this program an attractive alternative to serving jail time.
