The Basics

Nutrition in Recovery was founded in 2012 by David Wiss, a Master’s-level dietician and author, who offers stationary, mobile and remote treatment options throughout Los Angeles to offer specialized nutritional services for adults struggling with addiction. Treatment is based on findings that addiction causes significant vitamin deficiencies and offers education, counseling, monitoring and personal training for clients who have under gone a treatment program and need to rebuild themselves physically.

Treatment and Staff

The basic premise for treatment at NIR is that each client receives individualized focus and treatment plan to address their specific issues with food, whether it be an eating disorder, body image concerns or lack of nutrition being a result of a chemical dependency. Treatment offered includes individual counseling and group education with the intent to have clients change their views on food and it’s role in their happiness. The initial assessment at the facility serves to provide insight into each client’s habits with eating, water consumption, exercise, drug and alcohol use and nicotine. From there a treatment plan is put together that is detailed with not only what vitamin and nutritional deficiencies the individual may have, but also how the lack of proper nutrients affects the the brain, gut and hormonal system, which in many cases just exacerbates the problem. However in some cases if it seems like going through a more intensive residential or IOP would be a better first step before seeking treatment through NIR, David Wiss has extensive professional knowledge and experiences working at several different facilities and is able to refer the client to one of them so there’s a solid foundation.

Treatment breaks down to four categories, the first being nutrition education, the second nutrition counseling, third is monitoring and fourth is consulting and personal training. Education can take place in either a group or individual setting and includes hands on nutritional training, seminars, life skills workshops and literature. Counseling is more of an individual practice with behavioral health screening, grocery store trips, meal planning and coordination with associated medical professionals. The monitoring and consulting programs involve accountability check in’s with facility staff and regular Skype meetings, recording meals and movement assessments. Exercise is an important element to these programs, though the staff is careful to not substitute one addiction for another and have clients become dependent on working out in place of drugs and alcohol.

The small staff of six at Nutrition in Recovery are experienced and highly trained Master’s-level dieticians who all have a background in holistic wellness.
