The Basics
Located just north of San Francisco, California in Marin County, Nutreur is a treatment facility that specializes in the care of male and female clients struggling with a wide range of eating disorders as well as those with co-occurring mental health issues like anxiety, depression and trauma. Nutreur provides Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP) and Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) levels of care and employs a bio-psycho-social approach with the goal to treat the “whole person” rather than simply the symptoms. Nutreur utilizes a multi-faceted treatment strategy that integrates multiple therapeutic methods including evidence-based therapies, psychoeducation, nutrition, family therapy, life skills, experiential therapy and holistic methods. Nutreur primarily offers outpatient therapy and medication management; 12-step recovery isn’t facilitated.
Treatment and Staff
Nutreur treats an array of eating disorders like anorexia, bulimia and binge eating as well as unspecified eating disorders, with the goal to develop regular and healthy eating patterns, improve self-esteem and remove their anxiety around eating. Upon intake, clients go through a comprehensive assessment to help the Nutreur team design the best possible treatment plan tailored to the specific needs, goals and timeline of the individual. The facility also takes into consideration the client’s work and/or school schedule.
Nutreur has an integrative approach to care that synchronizes a number of therapies including integrative cognitive affective therapy (ICAT), family based therapy (FBT), psychoeducation, experiential therapy, evidence-based models like CBT, DBT, ACT and exposure response therapy (ERT) in addition to wellness activities and holistic methods. Clients participate in individual and group therapy as well as family therapy. The PHP involves 35 hours of therapy a week with constant supervision of meals, trips to the farmer’s market and restaurants. Clients work with a dietician to get them excited about food. This includes going to the local farmer’s market, planning three daily meals and snacks and learning meal preparation. The facility also provides psychiatric consultation and medication management in addition to skills groups that focus on nutrition, body image and coping.
Most clients either begin IOP after completion of the PHP or enter directly into IOP because they need more structure and support than outpatient services. Nutreur’s IOP is between three and five days a week and offers similar content as the PHP program. This includes a daily group therapy, weekly individual therapy, weekly family sessions, supervised meals and nutrition counseling in addition to psychiatric consultations.
Nutreur employs a multi-disciplinary team comprised of psychologist, dietician, nutrition assistant, psychiatrist, general practitioner and nurse. Medication management is available for those with co-occurring disorders.

Holistic and experiential activities are a significant part of the programming, as clients enjoy expressive arts, stand-up paddle boarding and yoga.
Nutreur recognizes the vital role family plays in the success of a long-term sustainable recovery. The facility runs weekly family therapy sessions in both the PHP and IOP, and team dietitians offer support and education on nutrition and boundaries.
