NuLife Review

NuLife Treatment Centers is a luxury treatment network based in the upscale Los Angeles suburb of Calabasas, California. NuLife was founded in 2013 by entrepreneurs Kage Njaka and JD Meints, who are both in recovery. Based on personal experiences, they were inspired to create an alternative to the traditional treatment experience. NuLife has four facilities in the LA area. They include residential treatment in Woodland Hills, and an outpatient facility and structured sober living homes for men and women in Calabasas. Through highly individualized care and a structured living environment, NuLife’s treatment continuum is client-centered and treats the causes and conditions of addiction rather than just the symptoms of the disease.

Accommodations and Food

The NuLife residential treatment facility is sprawling estate in the hills above the San Fernando Valley, about 20 miles outside of Los Angeles. Clients are housed in a luxurious home that sleeps up to 12 clients who are in the first phase of treatment. The California-style mansion has separate gender-specific wings, each with three double-occupancy bedrooms. There are three bathrooms per wing and bedrooms are furnished with two full or queen-size beds. All linens are provided as are storage containers and basic cleaning and toiletry supplies. Communal living areas have WiFi, TVs with cable and Netflix and comfortable seating areas for socializing. The landscaped grounds feature walking paths, a pool, gazebo and tennis courts.

The home has a full-service kitchen that is operated by a private chef who prepares a daily breakfast made to order with coffee and tea as well as lunch and dinner with a range of healthy and comfort foods. Meals are nutritious and can be designed to meet the dietary needs and restrictions of the clients.

Treatment and Staff

Treatment at NuLife begins at the inpatient level, with an option to step down to outpatient care following completion of the residential program. The facility does not provide detox services, but works closely with several local facilities. NuLife facilitates a safe transition to the residential program when detox is completed. The length of residential treatment at NuLife ranges from 30 to 90 days.

The treatment at NuLife is offered in a unique à la carte fashion. This is one step beyond individualized care, where clients and their therapists choose which components of treatment will be most helpful. The options include everything from traditional individual and group therapy, family counseling, relapse prevention and education to alternative and holistic options. Therapeutic techniques focus on trauma-informed care and include dual diagnosis support for those with co-occurring disorders. Clinical staff also provide EMDR and similar methods that help individuals with PTSD or other forms of trauma heal from the effects of past events that may be contributing to substance abuse. Residents are given the option to attend area 12-step and SMART Recovery meetings.

The NuLife team includes LCSWs, MFTs, a consulting psychiatrist and other therapists who are intern-level practitioners in process of receiving their licenses. Residents also receive general health care from consulting medical doctors prior to enrollment.

Extras

NuLife has an extensive music therapy program. Residents are encouraged write, perform and record their own songs. A studio engineer guides clients from start to finish in the recording process. The on-site studio has hosted great musicians like Jackson Browne, Steely Dan and James Taylor. The result is at least one original CD a year. All proceeds of the album sales go toward the HARP Foundation, which runs NuLife.

A fitness center membership is included in the benefits of the NuLife program and clients are regularly transported to the gym. Chiropractic services are also included to give clients alternative healing methods. Clients are also taken on outings including movies, restaurants, theme parks, local parks and other recovery fellowship activities.

In Summary

NuLife Treatment Centers is a luxury residential treatment experience that focuses on client centered-care and individualized treatment. The clinical staff and directors are passionate about providing a respectful approach to alcohol and drug treatment and utilize evidence-based treatment techniques, traditional therapy and a range of holistic methods to integrate recovery in the body, mind and spirit. Clients can expect to be treated as unique individuals, each with their own personal recovery needs.
