Nuestra Casa Recovery Program Review
Nuestra Casa Recovery Program is an outpatient and residential substance abuse treatment facility located in Fresno, California. Nuestra Casa is a non-profit corporation with a mission to assist those suffering from addiction in at-risk populations.
Nuestra Casa began in 1980 with the intention to address the needs of Spanish-speaking men in need of care. The program has since evolved to include English-speaking clients, but remains only for adult men over the age of 18. It is also recommended that all clients speak at least conversational Spanish, so they can take part in groups.
Other services at Nuestra Casa include a DUI program that is state licensed to work directly with courts and parole officers. All treatment at Nuestra Casa is offered at a sliding scale.
Accommodations and Food
Residents are accommodated in a simple residential home with 16 beds. Rooms and bathrooms are shared and come equipped with the basics. Clients rise at 6 am and immediately have breakfast. Lunch, snacks and dinner are also provided with basic comfort food. Allergies and specific meal requests are accommodated when possible. Clients spend their day in groups, with individual sessions scheduled as-needed.
Personal electronics and smoking are not permitted on-site. Outside snacks and soda are also not allowed. Clients must be in bed with lights-out by 10 pm.
Treatment and Staff
The first step for receiving treatment at Nuestra Casa is an assessment to determine whether the levels of care available are sufficient for each client’s needs. Those who are require detox services are referred to an outside facility. Once admitted, clients must maintain sobriety for 72 hours before officially being enrolled in the program.
Upon arrival, an individualized treatment plan is developed which includes some variation of individual and group therapy and the 12-step program. Groups are educational and also focus on anger-management and an introduction to peer-support programs in the community.
The first 30 days of residential treatment is a “black out” period, where clients are asked to refrain from contact with the outside world. After 30 days, personal phone calls are allowed from a house line. After 45 days, a home pass is given to clients for a half a day. Most residential stays average 90 days.
Those requiring a less intensive level of care are enrolled in the outpatient program. Sessions are scheduled Monday through Sunday and include individual and group therapy as well as the 12-steps.
Staff at Nuestra Casa is composed of two CBT counselors.
Extras
Nuestra Casa offers aftercare in the form of a 24-week group that focuses on relapse prevention. This program invites clients who are stepping down from residential or outpatient care to attend a weekly meeting and to develop a sober community and support network. Clients are also encouraged to work in the residential garden and participate in group walks.
Additionally, recreational activities such as physical fitness, gardening, reading sober-supportive books and re-socialization are offered to residential clients.
