Located just over 20 miles south of Appleton in Oshkosh, Wisconsin, Nova Counseling Services is a residential treatment program for clients struggling with addiction and substance abuse. Treatment is primarily 12-step oriented and is overseen by a multidisciplinary team of professionals. Though the facility also provides additional sober living and aftercare services, its flagship offerings are its residential treatment plans, which last 28 to 90 days.
Accommodations and Food
The facility at Nova Counseling Services has 50 beds available for men and women in dormitory-style accommodations. Rooms are typically shared and residents are kept separate by gender, each with twin beds, dressers and basic decorations. In addition to the bedrooms, the facility also has on-site therapy rooms, outdoor walking paths and an on-site cafeteria. Throughout their stay, all clients are served three healthy meals a day.
Treatment and Staff
Before beginning treatment, clients must submit an initial physical exam by a doctor clearing of them of any communicable diseases before enrolling. Participants also work with staff members to develop their care plans once admitted. Because the facility does not have on-site medical or psychiatric staff, those in need of detox need to pursue these services elsewhere before beginning treatment.
Once stabilized, residents attend busy days of treatment running from 6:45 am to 10:30 pm. After waking up, clients do a brief meditation before breakfast followed by check-ins, morning meetings and a transition into small groups and individual therapy. After lunch from 11:45 am to 1:00 pm, residents sit through an educational lecture and attend more counseling afterwards. Clients are granted free time from 4:30 to 5:15 pm before dinner, AA/NA meetings, chores and lights out at 10:30 pm.
Rather than an emphasis on clinical approaches, counselors work one-on-one with residents using the 12 steps as a main guide; dual diagnosis support and medication management are not available. Specific treatment plans for adolescents and young adults are also available whenever necessary.
The staff at Nova Counseling Services consists of 10 state-certified CSACs, many of whom are in recovery themselves.
Extras
Other special services include family therapy and gender-specific groups whenever necessary. In addition to the above, those who complete residential treatment can also transition to a 90-day sober living home or to outpatient aftercare services as necessary.
