Winchester VirginiaThe Basics

Northwestern Community Services is a Virginia-based network of mental health facilities that provide referral services and treatment for mental and behavioral health and substance abuse. While general mental health services are available in Front Royal, Winchester, Luray, Woodstock and New Market, substance abuse services are limited to the Winchester facility on an outpatient-basis. The facility provides detox as well as dual diagnosis support. Treatment is supported through public funding, allowing clients to pay  based on their income and ability.

Treatment and Staff

While substance abuse treatment at NCS is limited to a basic outpatient track, referrals to outside facilities  for residential treatment, sober living and halfway homes are available upon request.

Prior to admission, all clients are seen by the intake staff for an assessment which determines whether detox or a more intensive treatment plan is required.  Those who qualify for basic outpatient treatment meet with a case manager to map out an individualized treatment plan. Each unique track enables the client to attend services at a frequency and for a duration suitable to their needs.

The Winchester facility schedules both group and individual therapy which employ evidence-based methods of treatment including CBT. Additionally, clients are introduced to the 12-step framework to help develop a peer group. Therapy focuses on self-awareness, positive coping skills and relapse prevention skills.

Priority for services is given to intravenous drug users, women who are pregnant and women with children. Staff are qualified to treat individuals with co-occurring disorders and provide medication management services and additional treatment as-needed.

Therapeutic interventions are led by LPCs and LCSWs. Clients may also be seen by a psychiatrist and psychiatric nurses for medication and additional screenings.

Extras

NCS offers many extras that may or may not pertain to substance abuse clients. Vocational, living and other services are available for clients with intellectual disabilities and developmental disabilities. Day programs and in-home treatment are also available for these individuals. Additional services are available for children and youth with disabilities, including care and play therapy.

In Summary

Northwestern Community Services is a community services network that helps individuals gain access to the mental health and social services they need. Basic outpatient substance abuse treatment is just one of the many and varied services offered through NCS. Clients are treated on an individualized basis using evidence-based methods so they may have a specialized experience to begin their road to recovery. With an introduction to the 12 steps and a focus on developing positive coping skills, clients are given a peer support network as well as the tools they need to build a life of sobriety.
