Northwest Community Hospital of Arlington Heights, Illinois, a Chicago suburb, operates an adolescent outpatient treatment facility with Intensive Outpatient (IOP) and Partial Hospitalization (PHP) programs. The facility offers treatment for both substance abuse and co-occurring disorders.

Treatment and Staff

Using an online or in-person assessment of the client, Northwest develops an individualized treatment plan. Clients begin in either of two outpatient programs depending on their needs. PHP meets five days a week for six hours a day, with clients receiving a combination of group and individual therapy. IOP is five days a week for three hours a day, though the set-up is largely the same.

Therapy in both programs includes evidence-based methods like CBT, DBT and Motivational Interviewing (MI). Holistic offerings include relaxation and meditation techniques as well as music and art therapy.

Group therapy sessions are kept fairly small, with about 12 clients at a time at capacity and one counselor running each session. Topics include relapse prevention, anger management, coping skills and education about the disease of addiction and its effects on the brain. Those with co-occurring conditions are offered medication management services through Northwest. Random drug tests are performed regularly as a way to monitor each client’s compliance with the programs. While there is no set length of time for these programs since treatment is individualized, many clients stay for about three months.

The staff at the facility are a combination of LADCs, caseworkers, LMFTs, LCSWs and psychiatrists.

Extras

Family involvement is a crucial part of treatment plans at the facility and every step of the process includes family participation. Weekly family therapy and group sessions with multiple families are built into each treatment plan. An aftercare program is also available that includes weekly group sessions at the facility. These sessions run for an hour and a half.

In Summary

Northwest Community Hospital offers a range of outpatient treatment options with more depth and variety when it comes to treatment methods than the average outpatient program. Because this is a medical facility, dual diagnosis support and medication management round out treatment for more complex disorders. Though the cost is somewhat higher than average, Northwest Community Hospital remains a strong resource for those in the area.
