Based in Gladstone, Oregon, Northwest Behavioral Healthcare Services provides dual diagnosis inpatient care for adolescent clients between the ages of 12 and 17. Though located just south of Portland, the facility offers services to youth from Oregon and Washington, and prides itself on working with young people who have struggled in previous therapeutic environments.
Accommodations and Food
Located on a quiet, tree-lined campus that attempts to mirror a private school environment, Northwest Behavioral Healthcare Services is a relatively short-term program with most clients staying between 30 and 45 days. The lodgings are dormitory style in one large secured facility that contains distinct wings for male and female clients. There are usually between 48 and 50 clients in the program at a time. The rooms are set up suite-style with two rooms conjoined by a shared bathroom. The rooms are large and complete with modern accoutrements and furnishings. There are usually two to three residents per room. Clients can expect three meals a day, served cafeteria style and two snacks a day; usually after lunch and after dinner.
Treatment and Staff
Days at Northwest Behavioral Healthcare Services are busy ones, typically consisting of eight to 10 hours of therapy a day, seven days a week. Each day, clients attend a mixture of group and individual therapy, which are led by LADCs and CACs and feature an emphasis on DBT methods as well as an introduction to 12-step recovery. Clients can also expect dual diagnosis services with an on-staff psychiatrist and accompanying medication management. Though some clients have stayed as long as 60 days, the Northwest Behavioral Healthcare Services program typically concludes after 45 days, at which time, clients work with their counselors and family to determine their next step; either a local outpatient program or a long-term inpatient facility if a more intensive program is needed. Given the short term nature of the program, there are no official aftercare services, but clients do stay in contact with Northwest Behavioral Healthcare Services as they continue on their recovery journey.
In addition to its residential treatment facility, Northwest Behavioral Healthcare Services also provides community outreach services, sponsoring teen recovery support groups for teenagers in both Portland, Oregon and Vancouver, Washington.
Clients and their families considering the Northwest Behavioral Healthcare Services program can expect a modern recovery program in a serene setting. The days are busy with therapy and clients should not expect extensive free time during their stay, but rather an intensive recovery program that emphasizes DBT, dual diagnosis care and an introduction to the 12 steps.
