Winfield AlabamaThe Basics

Northwest Alabama Mental Health Center-Winfield offers outpatient counseling for adults and adolescents struggling with substance abuse and co-occurring disorders. Northwest serves five counties in Alabama, with the Winfield facility treating residents in Marion County. Situated in a clean, single-story brick structure with a welcoming entrance way, Northwest-Winfield has been a leader in mental health services since 1969.

Treatment and Staff

The first step in treatment is an assessment facilitated by a psychologist. Once evaluated, clients are assigned a primary counselor who works with them to devise a treatment schedule based on their specific needs. Typically, individual therapy meets weekly with one group therapy session per week. All sessions utilize CBT with topics including relapse prevention, healthy recreation, peer pressure, addiction studies and coping skills. In addition, those with co-occurring disorders attend groups specific to their diagnosis. Case management services are also available.

The Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) allows clients to have the option to intensify treatment by attending up to five groups per week. In addition to weekly urinalysis testing, clients are also expected to attend outside support groups such as AA/NA, Smart Recovery or Overcomers Outreach.

Adolescents are assigned a primary therapist and attend one group per week. All sessions use CBT and Motivational Interviewing (MI) and discuss topics such as peer pressure, addiction and the brain and family dynamics. While family therapy is not mandatory, participation is strongly encouraged. Adolescents under the age of 16 must have parental consent for treatment. As with the adults, young people are encouraged to attend outside support groups. The treatment team at Northwest-Winfield consists of LCSWs, CADACs and LADCs. Counseling hours are Mondays and Wednesdays from 8 am to 5 pm, with extended hours on Tuesdays and Thursdays until 9 pm.

Extras

Anger management and domestic violence education programs are provided with court referrals.
