northshore university healthsystemsThe Basics

NorthShore University HealthSystem in the Chicago suburb of Evanston, Illinois offers an array of treatment programs for substance abuse and co-occurring disorders aimed at adults over the age of 18, including a Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP), an Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) and a step down outpatient track. All are based on the 12 steps, with an emphasis on addiction education.

Treatment and Staff

Potential clients must receive an initial assessment with a caseworker who decides what treatment plan to place them in. PHP, also known at the facility as the day program, is a five-week treatment during which clients attend group therapy sessions and seminars from 8:45 am to 2:45 pm five days a week for the first three weeks. Depending on how they are progressing in the program, clients then attend shorter sessions from 8:45 am to 12 pm for the final two weeks. Group sessions cover various topics such as relapse prevention, coping skills, parenting, recovery and education about addiction itself. PHP also includes one individual therapy session with a caseworker assigned to the client at the beginning of the program. And for those interested in receiving treatment for co-occurring conditions, there is an additional group that meets once a week that includes medication management.

For those in IOP, treatment includes three days a week of group therapy for three hours at a time. Individual therapy can be made available as well, though it’s not a standard part of the treatment schedule. Groups include both men and women and generally consist of around 11 people with one case manager. One-on-one therapy uses the evidence-based methods of DBT and CBT. Staff also encourage clients to attend at least three AA or NA meetings per week while taking part in the programs.

After a client completes either program, they can continue on to once-a-week outpatient therapy that runs approximately 12 weeks. The program consists of one group therapy session each week for an hour and a half.

Staff is a mix of psychiatrists, psychologists and caseworkers. There is also a nurse who works in the co-occurring disorders program and can assist with medication management and run vitals if needed.

Extras

The facility offers a family program every Tuesday evening from 6 pm to 9 pm where family members attend a seminar about recovery and learn about the science of addiction.

In Summary

By emphasizing the need for education and prevention during treatment, NorthShore University HealthSystem helps clients to acquire new skills to benefit them in their sobriety. Though the program is fairly simple and somewhat expensive, it offers well-structured treatment in several tiers for clients suffering from a range of ailments.
