Niagra Falls New YorkNorthpointe Council Review

Founded in 1970, Northpointe Council is a nonprofit organization specializing in addiction education, intervention and treatment in Niagara Falls, New York. They offer many programs and services for individuals, families, schools, employers and the community. The administrative, education and prevention and drunk driving education offices are located downtown. Facilities that provide methadone maintenance, the outpatient clinic and the inpatient center are nearby. An additional outpatient clinic is located about 40 miles away, in Lockport.

Accommodations and Food

The 17-bed First Step Chemical Dependency Crisis Center inpatient facility is located in a large, two-story house in a quiet, residential neighborhood. Initially, clients are housed in a dorm-style room with six beds. This room is located close to the nurse’s station for monitored detox.

After several days, stabilized clients are moved to a smaller room that they share with a roommate of the same gender. The bedrooms are furnished with twin beds, dressers and desks. The house has a common room with a TV, but watching privileges are limited to evening hours only. Meals are served family-style, in the dining room. The food is home-cooked and basic, though they can cater to allergies.

Treatment and Staff

The inpatient facility offers a non-medical detox, under the supervision of nursing and counseling staff. If clients require medication or hospitalization, they are referred to an emergency room. A doctor offers dual-diagnosis support through initial evaluation and medication recommendations. The center operates round the clock, with a minimum of two nurses and counselors available from midnight to 6 am, and three or more at all other times.

The residential treatment program ranges from seven to 10 days, with clients referred to outpatient programs or longer-term inpatient facilities as needed upon completion. Attendance at AA/NA meetings is required, as is daily group therapy and individual therapy. Clients are not allowed to leave the facility except for approved appointments, and must complete daily chores as well as visits with their assigned counselor.

Northpointe Council offers a outpatient methadone maintenance treatment program at Niagara Falls Outpatient Clinic Trott Access Center. This program is recommended for clients with opiate dependency. Clients are closely monitored and supervised, and the program usually includes additional outpatient care.

The Lockport and Niagara Falls outpatient clinics offer counseling services for individuals and families dealing with addiction. Treatment tracks have been developed for minorities and special groups, including adolescents, women, Native Americans, those with co-occurring disorders and the criminal justice population. A typical outpatient program includes one two-hour group meeting and one individual or family counseling session per week. The treatment approach combines CBT and the 12 steps. Attendance at one NA/AA meeting week is required. Services are covered by most insurances, but sliding scale self-pay fees are available for individuals not covered by insurance.

Staff of all facilities includes nurses, counselors, physicians and therapists who specialize in addiction.

Extras

In Summary
