Milford OhioThe Basics

Northland has been offering outpatient substance abuse treatment services in the Cincinnati suburb of Milford, Ohio, since 1984. Northland’s comprehensive services include outpatient detox, Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT), an Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP), aftercare, family counseling, substance abuse education, crisis intervention and case management.

Treatment and Staff

At Northland, detox is offered for those clients who are addicted to opioids and it is of the ambulatory variety. It may last three to five days and requires clients to visit the Northland facilities for five to six hours daily, during which they are placed under the care of Northland nursing staff and supervised by a physician.

Ongoing MAT with the use of Buprenorphine (Suboxone) is also provided. Patients who meet criteria for Suboxone must agree to participate in IOP for eight to 12 weeks minimum, attend off-site 12-step meetings, submit to random urine screenings and attend the aftercare/relapse prevention Program which lasts a minimum of one year. Patients will gradually taper off of Suboxone over the course of six to 12 months based on their progress in the program.

Traditional treatment begins with a two-hour assessment and drug screening. From that point on, the Northland IOP may last six to 12 weeks depending on the individual client’s progress. Individuals take part in three to four counseling sessions per week in group format—offered from 9 am to 12 pm and from 6 to 9 pm—and also get to have an individual session every two weeks. Clients are required to take part in off-site AA/NA meetings, daily.

Northland employs 10 LADCs who run the group and individual counseling sessions. A medical doctor and nurses are also on staff to oversee detox and MAT.

Extras

The aftercare program focuses on relapse prevention. Clients meet once a week for a ninety minute session—either between 10 and 11:30 am or between 6 and 7:30 pm. Typical length of attendance for the aftercare program is 52 weeks.

In Summary

A longstanding organization with over three decades of experience, Northland is a great outpatient and sobriety support option. It accepts Medicaid for all of its programs including detox. Medicare, on the other hand, is not compatible with Northland services. Naturally, Northland also accepts self-pay, at fairly reasonable prices at that and in fact usually discounts or waive screening fees (such as those for urinalysis and breathalyzers) for self-pay clients.
