From detox to residential to outpatient, Northland Recovery Center has something for everyone. Located in Grand Rapids, Minnesota, a small town 80 miles northwest of Duluth, it has a strong foundation in the 12 steps and provides people from all walks of life with the opportunity to embrace a new way of living through meetings, therapy, life skills and community.

Accommodations and Food

Men, women and adolescents live in separate residences, each located just minutes from one another. The homes are quaint and comfortable, housing around 10 people at a time. Modest bedrooms feature twin-sized beds and small dressers are shared between two clients. The homes also have common areas with a television, a fully stocked kitchen and a dining room. The adult homes ] offer outdoor space for smoke breaks.

While some of the therapy is done within the home, clients are transferred to the main facility for the majority of their group work. The main facility is a converted office space and just a short drive away.

When it comes to meals, Northland Recovery Center likes to instill a sense of personal responsibility without overwhelming clients. Instead of requiring them to cook for themselves three times a day, they are only in charge of breakfast. The staff stocks the kitchen each week with all the necessary ingredients and items, taking requests before they visit the grocery store. Lunch and dinner are cooked at the main facility by the cooking staff and brought over to the homes. Coffee is allowed at breakfast for the adults and snacks are available throughout the day.

Treatment and Staff

Treatment begins with a medically monitored detox for those who need stabilization before entering the program. This process typically lasts for five days and costs $500 per day. Once detox is completed, residents follow a rigorous schedule of therapy and education. Individual therapy occurs once a week while clients participate in group therapy for several hours each day. Therapy provides dual diagnosis support and covers topics such as relapse prevention, anger management and trauma. Clients can also attend on-site AA/NA meetings several times a week while educational classes cover each of the 12 steps in great detail.

Northland Recovery Center fully supports family involvement during the client’s stay. Each week, families are invited in for a full day of group therapy. During this time, family members can process their feelings, learn coping skills and work on relationships with the client. All family members who participate in this day qualify for visits with the client.

Following the completion of residential, clients can step down into an outpatient program. The outpatient tracks provide intensive support with added freedom, allowing clients to live at home. The program can be attended during the day or night, depending on the client’s schedule.

The staff includes numerous LADCs, nurses and a psychologist.

Extras

Exercise is available a couple times a week during off-site trips to the YMCA. In addition, women can participate in guided yoga classes in their home once a week.

In Summary

While many affordable treatment centers take on a large amount of clients, Northland Recovery Center keeps things small, allowing for plenty of individual attention and nurturing support.
