The Basics
Northern Kentucky’s NorthKey Community Care was founded in 1966. Originally a psychiatric hospital, it now offers an outpatient treatment and counseling network for individuals and families suffering from addiction.
Treatment and Staff
Addiction treatment is available at any one of the 17 NorthKey Community Care offices. The NorthKey Regional Prevention Center provides intervention services, outreach programs, educational courses and a resource library. Psychiatric evaluations and referral services are also offered for individuals who may need to seek inpatient treatment, detox or psychiatric medication elsewhere.
NorthKey Community Care offers an Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) program that is exclusively for chemically dependent women. Research indicates that addiction manifests itself differently among men and women and NorthKey Community Care takes this into consideration when implementing treatment plans for female clients. The program consists of group therapy three times a week and individual therapy weekly with licensed professionals. Education is also a key component of IOP, with clients being taught relapse prevention, the disease concept of addiction and the stages of recovery.
NorthKey Community Care, which has a long history of treating mental illness, also offers an IOP track for dual diagnosis.
Services are provided by a staff of 22 licensed addiction professionals and 11 Master’s-level therapists, who view chemical dependency as an illness and believe it should be treated as such. A team of seven psychiatrists handle the mental health issues that require medication.

In addition to the outpatient substance abuse treatment program, North Key Community Care offers an anger management program, family and child services, adult services, intellectual and developmental disabilities services, and inpatient treatment for children with serious mental problems.
