NHS WolfeboroThe Basics

A group of clinical facilities in New Hampshire, Northern Human Services (NHS) offers psychiatric, mental health and substance abuse services to clients who live in the Coos, Carrol and Grafton counties.  NHS treats seniors, adults and children in outpatient settings. Only four NHS facilities offer substance abuse treatment: the Colebrook, Berlin, Conway and Wolfeboro offices. NHS clinical staff primarily address substance abuse disorders in dual-diagnosis clients. Family services and support play a significant role in the recovery process for NHS clients. Other services include screenings, assessments, individual counseling and group counseling. NHS provides a broad network of healthcare alliances with other mental health facilities of New Hampshire.

Treatment and Staff

The four facilities at NHS offer comprehensive outpatient treatment per ASAM criteria. Clinicians lead assessments, screenings and evaluations at intake. Screenings provide insight into the intensity and/or potential of a substance abuse problem. The SBIRT (Screening, Brief Intervention and Referral to Treatment) is a process to help with early identification and prevention of clients at risk for substance abuse disorders. Staff develop individualized treatment plan for clients at the initial individual counseling/intake session. Staff provides recommendations for services and follow-up appointments.

Length of outpatient treatment varies from six to eight weeks or longer. Clients must meet with clinical staff for a minimum of three days a week for three hours per group or individual session. Individual and group sessions focus on intervention plans, recovery goals, building recovery skills and identification of triggers for relapse prevention. Staff encourage clients to attend off-site 12-step groups at least two to three times a week. Psychiatric treatment is available for dual-diagnosis support, as-needed. Staff work on discharge plans with clients for continuing care and family support.

The Conway facility offers additional outpatient services for substance abuse, including detox and buprenorphine services. The clinical staff at Conway, including a psychiatrist, oversees client detox.

NHS offers emergency psychiatric services, victim’s assistance, case management, referrals, consultations and education. Services are available to help clients living with mental illness and/or co-occurring disorders function more easily in their communities.

Northern Human Services employs LADCs on staff at all facilities. Psychiatrists on staff include Dr. Stacey Charron, MD, at Berlin, Dr. Lester Nicholson, MD, at Wolfeboro and Dr. Norman Van Leuven, MD, at Colebrook.

Extras

NHS offers non-substance abuse related psychiatric treatment. Residential services are available at NHS for psychiatric treatment. The Assertive Community Treatment (ACT) program was put in place to intervene and prevent psychiatric hospitalizations. The Child Impact Program assists with psychiatric intervention. The Resident Education and Assistance Program (REAP) is available to seniors with mental illness or co-occurring disorders. NHS offers parenting education and treatment for infant mental health for newborns to children up to age five.

In Summary

Northern Human Services provides substance abuse treatment with a primary focus on clients with co-occurring disorders. The agency is pervasive in the North Country of New Hampshire, though more acute care for substance abuse is relegated to the Conway facility. The psychiatrists on staff, along with LADCs, provide comprehensive care to clients in need of dual-diagnosis support. Northern Human Services is a strong community healthcare agency that is subsidized by the Department of Health and Human Services to offer affordable outpatient treatment to New Hampshire residents.
