NorthEast Psychiatric ServicesThe Basics

NorthEast Psychiatric Services provides outpatient chemical dependency treatment as part of the Carolinas HealthCare System, a network with over 900 facilities in North and South Carolina that all grew out of a community hospital founded in 1940. Its team of mental health professionals work together in a group practice to help clients at three North Carolina locations: Albemarle, Concord and Harrisburg.

Treatment and Staff

Clients are placed in one of three levels of outpatient treatment after an initial consultation. If detox or residential treatment is recommended, referrals are made to suitable facilities within the Carolinas HealthCare System.

The three levels of treatment for adults and adolescents are Intensive Outpatient (IOP), intermediate and short-term. Short-term treatment is for people who are just beginning to experience problems with alcohol and other drugs, while intermediate treatment is for those who are already experiencing significant problems as a result of substance abuse. Clients who qualify for intensive outpatient have reached a stage of abuse that requires a more rigorous recovery program.

All three levels of outpatient follow the same treatment philosophy. What distinguishes them is primarily the frequency of a client’s participation in groups and individual therapy. A client in the most intensive level might meet for group therapy three times a week, seeing an individual therapist once, while a client at a less intensive level might come in for group once a week and only have an individual appointment once or twice a month. This is all decided according to individual needs.

NorthEast Psychiatric Services uses the 12-step method of recovery and clients are encouraged to attend 12-step meetings outside of the program requirements. Recovery is geared toward enhancing self-esteem, interpersonal and family relationships, and the productivity of clients’ working life. To this end, clients discuss in groups how to connect with and communicate feelings, how to set realistic academic or vocational goals, how to affirm themselves and how using has affected their lives. Dual diagnosis support, if needed, is provided in individual therapy.

There are 19 psychiatrists, psychologists and therapists in the NorthEast Psychiatric Services group practice.

Extras

NorthEast Psychiatric Services offers several other structured groups outside of their outpatient chemical dependency programs. There is a once-a-week anger management group for men that meets on Tuesdays at 4 pm; new clients can join the group every week. A therapist facilitates this group and clients discuss how anger manifests itself in relationships and at inappropriate times, what their anger triggers are, and the role of alcohol and drugs in acting out.

An Angry Adolescent group for boys meets Thursdays at 4:00 p.m, while one for girls only meets Tuesdays at 5:30 p.m. The goal of these groups is to help teens develop effective coping and social skills that will enable them to function better at school and at home.

In Summary

NorthEast Psychiatric Services could be particularly beneficial to teens, as several psychiatrists and psychologists on staff specialize in adolescent mental health. And being a part of the Carolinas HealthCare System means the staff have vast resources at their disposal.
