NCCBHThe Basics

The Northeast Community Center for Behavioral Health, located in Philadelphia, has provided outpatient treatment to adult men and women since 1958. Its programs combine 12-step and evidence-based therapy to create individualized treatment plans for substance abuse and co-occurring conditions.

Treatment and Staff

Clients seeking treatment must first undergo an in-person evaluation by one of the clinical staff. Though Northeast Community’s program is not an Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP), clients attend group therapy several times a week and receive individual therapy depending on individual needs. Those who require more intensive programs can be referred elsewhere.

The program is based on the 12 steps and clients are strongly encouraged to attend several off-site AA/NA meetings in addition to the main treatment program. Group therapy sessions have no more than 10 participants and include both men and women. The focus in these sessions is on relapse prevention, coping skills, education about the disease of addiction and step work. Individual therapy is designed to serve clients’ specific needs, with modalities including CBT, DBT, Motivational Interviewing (MI) and EMDR.

Northeast Community’s co-occurring disorder program offers medication management and clients meet with a psychiatrist regularly (in addition to the standard outpatient therapy).

The facility performs frequent and random drug tests to monitor each client’s sobriety. Due to the individualized nature of the programs, there are no required lengths for any of the programs.

The program staff is comprised of case managers, LCSWs, LADCs and psychiatrists, all of whom are supervised by a medical director. The facility also employs alumni of the program as peer counselors who offer additional advice and guidance to current clients.

Extras

The facility offers therapy services to families and spouses of clients  in the form of individual sessions with just the family and client and family therapy. These sessions are integrated into each individual’s scheduled therapy.

In Summary

Northeast Community Center for Behavioral Health offers many different evidence-based treatment options and support for those with co-occurring disorders. Because groups are kept intentionally small, clients should have plenty of attention from the qualified staff. For those in the Philadelphia area, Northeast Community Center is worth considering for outpatient care.
