Founded in 1959 in East Boston, Noddles Island is the outpatient substance abuse treatment program run through North Suffolk Mental Health Association’s Addiction Department. The organization serves adult men and women in the East Boston area.

Treatment and Staff

Individuals begin the treatment process at Noddles Island with an in-person assessment with a counselor. During this meeting, they discuss the individual’s substance abuse history and determine the needed level of care. If he or she is deemed a good fit for the program, the counselor helps devise a treatment plan.

The outpatient program is operated in an office-based setting and consists of both group and individual counseling. The exact length and intensity of the program varies from client to client and is based on the counselor’s assessment of the client’s need. Counselors aim to address each person’s individual needs in the group sessions and use a variety of treatment techniques including harm reduction, Motivational Interviewing (MI) and CBT. The organization also offers groups focused on substance abuse education, relapse prevention and psycho-education. Individual therapy is scheduled based on the needs of the client.

Although Noddles Island is not 12-step based, counselors strongly encourage clients to attend outside AA/NA meetings while in the program.

Noodles Island is dual diagnosis and offers individual sessions with a mental health counselor for clients with potential co-occurring disorders. The organization also has an adolescent treatment program for individuals between the ages of 13 and 17. This program consists of both group and individual sessions as well as toxicology screenings. The meetings are available in the afternoons and evenings so to not interfere with the client’s academic schedules.

The staff at Noddles Island consists of a mixture of LCSWs, LPCs and CACs.

Extras

Noddles Island offers sessions with the counselor, client and their family members, per client request. These meetings aim to address family issues that could have affected the individual’s substance abuse tendencies and aim to establish healthy communication practices in the family.

Noddles Island also offers a Suboxone program for clients undergoing opiate withdrawal symptoms.  It also facilitates court-ordered programs including a drug court as well as tobacco and gambling addiction programs.

In Summary

Noddles Island offers individualized and comprehensive outpatient treatment for adult and adolescent men and women in the East Boston area. The variety of treatment techniques and groups allow both clients and counselors the opportunity to find the best methods to address each person’s unique recovery needs. The family counseling helps both educated loved ones on addiction and also ally them with the client during the treatment process.
