meridian-houseNorth Suffolk Addiction Services: Meridian House Review

Meridian House was initially built in 1878 in the Eagle Hill district of East Boston and acquired by North Suffolk Mental Health Association in 1971. Now an offering of North Suffolk Addiction Services, the facility provides residential substance abuse treatment to adults in the greater Boston area.

Accommodations and Food

Meridian House is a large red brick building in a nice area of East Boston. The home has a double and single bedrooms available and can accommodate up to 30 residents at a time. While the program is co-ed, rooms are gender-specific; each with twin beds, a small closet and dressers for personal storage. The house also has designated areas for therapy, a large dinning room and a common area with a TV. Residents participate in a number of recreational activities including volunteering at local gardens and playing sports when the weather permits.

The facility’s on-staff chef prepares three meals a day based off a set menu; however, clients with food allergies or dietary restrictions can usually be accommodated. Snacks are also available throughout the day in the kitchen.

Treatment and Staff

Perspective clients have a phone assessment with an intake coordinator to determine compatibility with the program. Clients then meet with a counselor to determine their needs and develop a treatment plan. Meridian House operates on a sliding scale to accommodate people of all economic backgrounds. Those going through withdrawal are referred to an outside detox before beginning treatment.

Although the exact length and intensity of the program may vary, the average stay is nine to 12 months. Treatment consists of group and individual counseling that uses evidence-based practices such as CBT, DBT and Motivational Interviewing (MI). Groups also use addiction education, sharing and relapse prevention techniques.  Although sizes vary, Meridian House aims to keep groups as small as possible. Its gender-specific groups also provide a comfortable space to explore men’s and women’s issues separately. Individual therapy is scheduled as needed. Treatment also includes the principles of 12-step recovery, with weekly AA and NA meetings at the house that clients are strongly encouraged to attend.

For clients with a dual diagnosis, additional support is offered by way of referrals to North Suffolk’s mental health counselors and well as medication management.

Staff consists of LCSWs, LPCs and CACs.

Extras

Although Meridian House does not have an official aftercare program, clients have the option of stepping down to Noddles Island outpatient program or getting referred to another outpatient program. Finally, Meridian House also occasionally hosts alumni cookouts and events.

In Summary

North Suffolk Addiction Services’ Meridian House offers comprehensive and affordable residential treatment in the form of  CBT and MI and 12-step principles. Its flexible length of stay allows clients to receive as much structured treatment as they need and the gender-specific groups are an added bonus, making Meridian House an inpatient treatment program worth considering.
