The Basics

North Mississippi Medical Center (NMMC) offers mental health and chemical dependency services through its Behavioral Health Center in Tupelo, Mississippi. The NMMC Behavioral Health Center has provided care to clients for over 30 years and is located on the NMMC campus. The facility provides medical detox, specialized care for clients with co-occurring disorders and those with psychiatric issues independent of substance abuse. The Behavioral Health Center offers inpatient treatment for psychiatric issues and Intensive Outpatient (IOP) for substance abuse issues. The substance abuse recovery curriculum is based on the tenets of 12-step recovery.

Treatment and Staff

All new clients at NMMC begin treatment with a free and confidential assessment. The results of this team assessment inform a client’s next steps. If it is determined that a client needs detox to begin treatment, detox in a hospital setting is offered. NMCC’s is a medical detox, with Suboxone available if necessary to aid clients in opiate withdrawal. The NMMC Behavioral Health Center has 66 beds in three different units for those who require detox or psychiatric inpatient care.

Those who do not need medical detox and who do not have an acute psychiatric condition begin with outpatient treatment. The NMMC Behavioral Health Center offers only IOP and requires clients to complete six to 12 weeks of treatment. IOP entails group therapy three nights a week for two to three hours at a time. The therapeutic modalities offered are CBT and EMDR. If necessary, staff will perform psychological assessments and issue randomized drug tests. Physicians see clients once a month. Individual therapy sessions are offered every other week for at least one hour per session. Clients are also required to attend two 12-step meetings a week—either on or off-site.

The NMMC Behavioral Health Center staff, includes LPCs, psychiatrists, physicians, registered nurses, therapists and LICSWs.

Extras

An aftercare program is available to those who complete IOP treatment. The program lasts for two years, requiring participants to meet with a group once a week to check in, as well as attend individual counseling sessions as they are needed. If somebody has completed IOP and has other issues besides chemical dependency, psychological testing is available to help determine a separate course of treatment.

The Behavioral Health Center at NMMC also offers a family program. The family meets three evenings a week for 12 weeks Mondays through Wednesdays, followed by an AA meeting together once a week. The family works with therapists and counselors to learn about the disease of addiction and how it affects the family.

In Summary

North Mississippi Medical Center’s Behavioral Health Center emphasizes psychiatric care. The facility lends itself to intense treatment for psychiatric disorders, so clients who do not have co-occurring disorders may desire a facility with a more laid-back atmosphere. Nonetheless, for a potential client with serious chemical dependency, the rigor of North Mississippi Medical Center’s chemical dependency IOP may be just the ticket.
