North Dakota Department of Human ServicesThe Basics

The North Dakota Department of Human Services provides outpatient and residential substance abuse treatment at its Lake Region Human Service Center Chemical Dependence Program in Devils Lake. Devils Lake is a small town in the northern half of the state, home to the Lake Region State College and the North Dakota School for the Deaf. Lake Region has been offering outpatient treatment for nearly 30 years.

Treatment and Staff

After an assessment, clients are placed in the Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) or standard outpatient treatment track. Clients in the IOP attend an hour of group therapy three times a week and have individual therapy at least once a week. Most clients complete their IOP treatment plan in six to eight weeks. Clients in the standard outpatient track attend group therapy once or twice a week and have individual therapy as-needed. The standard outpatient treatment plan is typically 16 weeks.

Groups are led by credentialed addiction counselors and seldom exceed 10 participants. Treatment follows the Matrix Model and counselors use CBT and Motivational Interviewing (MI) in sessions. Clients are not required to attend 12-step or other peer support meetings during treatment, but they are strongly encouraged to do so. While clinicians can address those with a mild dual diagnosis, treatment doesn’t focus on co-occurring disorders and clients with a serious mental health diagnoses are referred to Lake Region’s Behavioral Health Department for additional therapy and medication.

Extras

Treatment is available in American Sign Language. Clients’ families can come to their individual sessions if the treatment team thinks it would be beneficial. Clients often step down from the IOP to standard outpatient, and clients who’ve completed their standard outpatient program can attend a weekly continuing care group for relapse prevention.
