With locations in both Cambridge and Somerville, Massachusetts, North Charles, Inc. has been a Boston-area behavioral health services provider for over 35 years. In addition to its mental health counseling services, the facility offers two outpatient programs for substance abuse treatment.
Treatment and Staff
For clients in need of Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT), the facility offers the North Charles Institute for the Addictions (NCIA) program, which is a CARF-accredited opioid treatment program and one of the first methadone programs in the state. Clients participating in this program receive their doses and toxicology screenings at the facility’s Cambridge location. Those participating in the NCIA program can also receive counseling and case management services at the Somerville location as part of their program.
The Somerville location is also the headquarters of North Charles, Inc.’s primary outpatient program, the Impact program. Clients in the Impact program participate in weekly group, individual and family therapy and also receive case management. Given North Charles, Inc.’s mental health services, dual diagnosis care is available and clients can receive medication management, which is overseen by the on-staff psychiatrist. Additionally, the facility has a medical director, registered nurses, LSWs and licensed mental health counselors who handle the majority of treatment activities. Clients in need of a more comprehensive mental health program can also participate in the North Charles Mental Health Clinic program, which is also based out of the Somerville location. The length of the Impact program varies depending on client need and generally involves a slow tapering off of group and individual sessions over the course of one year.
Extras
Aftercare is provided in the form of group and individual sessions on an as-needed basis and continuing case management services.
In addition to its NCIA, Impact and mental health programs, North Charles, Inc. also offers a number of specialty programs that address specific client needs, such as the Bridge Program which focuses on finding permanent housing and employment for homeless and indigent clients. There is also a relapse prevention program that seeks to provide ongoing care for those in the Bridge Program or those who continue to face housing issues.

While the outpatient program for substance abuse at North Charles, Inc. is largely standard, comprised of group, individual and family therapy, as well as dual diagnosis services, clients can be sure they are aligning themselves with an institution that has expansive resources and a distinguished history. In addition to their outpatient program, clients can also expect MAT, a comprehensive mental health program and specific case management services that aim to provide a secure and lasting recovery.
