The Basics

The North American Indian Alliance (NAIA) Chemical Dependency Program in Butte, Montana offers an outpatient treatment program that specializes in substance abuse. The NAIA, established in 1969, is designed to fulfill the particular needs of Native American persons from urban environments in the Butte-Silver Bow community. As a nonprofit, the NAIA is focused on general healthcare, mental health and behavioral issues and substance abuse treatment is of critical importance. This is a small, urban clinic that only treats persons of Native American decent.

Treatment and Staff

The NAIA Chemical Dependency Program offers comprehensive assessments for clients at intake. This is a very small program that offers an “old school” counseling model of treatment. They deal with a client’s chemical addiction above all else, as opposed to first addressing the client’s underlying behavioral or emotional issues. The NAIA outpatient program does not include therapeutic modalities like CBT or DBT, which explore and are meant to rewire unhealthy emotional and behavioral patterns. Instead, counselors interact with clients during individual counseling sessions at least once a week and focus on the practical—work, interpersonal relationships and developing parenting skills. Clients are encouraged to attend 12-step meetings for additional support, though it is not required to complete the program.

The staff includes a health coordinator CADCs and volunteers.

Extras

NAIA provides aftercare services for clients who have been through its outpatient program. Counseling is also available for outside issues such as post-traumatic stress disorder, partner violence and domestic violence.

Services are available for the hearing-impaired.

In Summary

The North American Indian Alliance Chemical Dependency Program offers basic substance abuse treatment for the Native American population in the community of Butte. This is a no frills outpatient program, but it does have a robust community willing to support its growth. The NAIA also has a vested interest in the population it serves, therefore more resources will be dedicated to future chemical dependency programs like this. For clients without income, services are provided on a sliding fee scale.
