The Basics

Located in Miami, Florida, Nicklaus Children’s Hospital offers a specialized program that treats clients struggling with a range of eating disorders including anorexia, binge eating, breast disorders and bulimia. Founded in 1950, Nicklaus is South Florida’s only licensed hospital that exclusively specializes in the care of children. For individuals in the eating disorder program, the facility seeks to treat the root cause or causes of the disorder. As such, Nicklaus adopts a physical-mental-emotional approach to care that integrates a number of therapeutic methods into an individualized treatment solution.

Treatment and Staff

Nicklaus Children’s Hospital treats a range of eating disorders including anorexia, bulimia, binge eating and compulsive overeating. Before beginning treatment in the eating disorders program, children must first undergo a comprehensive evaluation that includes medical history, a physical exam and a psychological exam. This assessment helps the hospital staff determine the most effective individualized treatment plan that is tailored to the specific needs, goals and availability of the client. A team of physicians, psychiatrists, psychologists, child experts and nutritionists develop the strategy based off the intake results. The length of care varies depending on the status of the individual, with some children transferring directly into inpatient care and others receiving outpatient treatment at one of the 10 locations in and around Miami including Doral, Weston, Palm Beach Gardens, Miramar, Miami Lakes, Miami, Palmetto Bay, Pinecrest and Homestead. Outpatient care can be ideal for children and adolescents that either cannot commit to a residential program or for those with time commitments remaining in school.

Children in the inpatient phase of the eating disorders program receive around-the-clock medical supervision and psychiatric care as well as individual, group and family therapy to help educate families about the disease. Families learn about enabling behavior, setting proper boundaries and assigning proper roles. The 12-step method is not a component of the programming.

The Nicklaus Children’s Hospital team is comprised of physicians, psychiatrists, psychologists, child specialists, social workers, therapists, nutritionists and a nursing team. Nicklaus is a hospital with over 650 attending physicians. Clients with co-occurring mental illness in need of dual diagnosis support can receive medication management.

Extras

Nicklaus believes a commitment to continued care is an integral aspect to the success of a sustainable recovery. As such, family involvement is a large component, and clients and their families can continue treatment on a less intensive basis when formalized programming is complete as a form of aftercare.
