Easton ConnecticutThe Basics

Founded in 2012 in Easton, Connecticut, by Salvatore DiNardo, a real estate developer, Nexus Sober House provides safe and structured sober living for men in recovery. Their belief is that undergoing recovery alone is a difficult road, whereas experiencing the healing process with like-minded comrades makes the journey through recovery much easier and facilitates a higher level of success.

Accommodations and Amenities

Nexus Sober House accommodates eight men who live in two houses attached by a residential breezeway. The houses sit on three acres. Dense foliage and trees surround the property. The residence, which was built in 1971, includes a wood floored living room with leather couches, a rock fireplace and a large window. The fully equipped kitchen includes white linoleum tiles and dark brown cabinets. A country-style dining room has a huge window overlooking a woodsy landscape. The house also has a large wooden deck, and an outdoor rock fireplace. Clients share double-occupancy rooms, which include twin beds with headboards, nightstands or dressers, lamps and closet space. There are a few singles, but typically clients start in a double room. Amenities include all utilities, Cable TV and laundry.

Clients are responsible for their own groceries and meal preparation. A house manager lives on the premises, and oversees operations.

Rules and Regulations

Prior to admission, clients must have undergone detox and be stable. A six-month minimum length of stay is required. During the first 30 days, clients must gain employment. Since Nexus Sober House is rooted in the 12 steps, clients must be present at 90 AA/NA/CA meetings in 90 days and have attendance cards initialed by the meeting’s secretary. Other requirements include attending an in-house 12-step course. Staff teaches the course, which outlines AA practices and principles.

Clients must make sure that their rooms and common areas are kept up to par. Performance of household chores is also required. The curfew is 10 pm Sundays through Thursdays, and midnight on Fridays and Saturdays. At Nexus Sober House, random drug and alcohol screenings are conducted. The house maintains a zero tolerance policy, and those who have relapsed are immediately dismissed from the premises. Additionally, clients that refuse testing are also removed from the house. Nexus Sober House also practices zero tolerance regarding any form of suspected criminal activity. A family-style environment is upheld. Residents must treat their housemates with respect.

The 30-day cost for a double is $1000, and a single room is $1500. There is an additional $500 sobriety security deposit. Prior to moving out, residents must provide a minimum of 30 days notice.

Extras

The Nexus Sober House organization is in the process of acquiring a female-only house. The house is estimated to open between March and May 2016.

In Summary

Nexus Sober House is a great fit for men who really want to integrate the 12-steps into their lives. The structured environment and close camaraderie inside the house, provides additional guidance for men while they work on their steps, and study their Big Books.
