Las Vegas NevadaThe Basics

NextStep Ministries was founded in 2006 by preacher Walt Kwasniewski just outside Las Vegas in Henderson, Nevada. NextStep is a Christian faith-based sober living home that provides shelter for financially challenged men who are in recovery from addiction. NextStep Ministries believes that Bible principles and a strong belief in Jesus is the only way to recover from chemical dependency, co-occurring disorders and other addictions, including gambling.

Accommodations and Amenities

The five-bedroom house accommodates no more than six men, per the City of Henderson’s zoning restrictions. Residents are paired in rooms that include twin beds, dressers and shared closet space. There are a few private rooms available for an additional cost, depending on the current occupancy. Amenities include all utilities, a washer, dryer, Internet and Cable TV. Smoking is permitted outdoors only.

While residents are generally responsible for their own groceries and meal preparation, there is a family-style meal served each week after the required 6 pm Monday night Bible study.

Rules and Regulations

Prior to admission, residents must have undergone a complete detox and pass a drug test. Additionally, random drug and alcohol screenings are conducted. Since NextStep Ministries practices a zero tolerance for those testing positive, immediate eviction is guaranteed. Clients who are suspected to be under the influence are also terminated. Those who don’t return to the house within a 24-hour time frame are also told to leave. At NextStep Ministries, any sexual conduct, arguments or theft are other reasons for discharge.

Curfew is midnight from Sundays through Thursdays, and one am on Fridays and Saturdays. Because NextStep encourages the men to become self-sufficient, clients who work past curfew are given more leeway. Those who lose their jobs are also given 30 days to catch up on their rent. Requirements include attendance at a minimum of one NextStep gospel service, including the Monday night Bible study or an outreach gospel service.

While 12-step meetings are not offered on the premises, residents are allowed to attend on their own time. Clients undergo a 30-day evaluation, on the fourth Wednesday of each month. During the review, their progress in the faith-based program is assessed. NextStep Ministries has no minimum-stay requirement, and clients may reside as long as they wish, as long as they are in good standing. The 30-day cost for a private room is $400, and $325 for a double. Additionally, there is a $100 security deposit.

Extras

Once a week, the homeless are invited to take showers and wash their clothing at the sober living house. Additionally, NextStep Ministries provides four outreach programs in local parks. The programs include a gospel service and free meal.

In Summary

Walt Kwasniewski is committed to serving the large homeless and addicted population in the Las Vegas area. He is passionate about Christ and eager to share his beliefs in an effort to help the downtrodden. For those who have already completed treatment and are seeking an intensely Christian-oriented approach to sober living, NextStep Ministries would be a good fit. On the other hand, for guys who are not keen about the Bible, this is not the place. NextStep Ministries is usually full during the winter, so those interested are encouraged to join a waiting list.
