Asheville North CarolinaThe Basics

Founded in 2006 by Susan Stader and Tony Gause in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Asheville, North Carolina, Next Step Recovery provides sober living for men, ages 18 and older. Next Step Recovery thrives on maintaining a strong sense of community, and clients are provided with additional supportive services, as well as a solid 12-step foundation for recovery.

Accommodations and Amenities

Next Step Recovery is located inside a quaint Colonial-style apartment complex with pristine landscaping, and includes four neighboring fully furnished apartments that have a combined 24-bed capacity. Two other apartments accommodate staff, which provides around-the-clock supervision.

Clients are responsible for their own groceries, and preparing meals, except for Tuesday and Sunday evenings, when residents rotate as a group, and prepare food for the entire community. Meals are cooked in fully equipped kitchens, and the evening gatherings are designed to teach life skills, and provide fellowship. Amenities include Wi-Fi, cable TV, transportation, laundry facilities and a swimming pool. Smoking is allowed in outdoor designated areas only.

Rules and Regulations

Potential clients must have been clean and sober for a minimum of 30 days or have successfully graduated from residential treatment. A 90-day minimum length of stay is required, and typically clients reside at Next Step Recovery from six to nine months. At Next Step Recovery, clients progress through six levels, and initially the curfew time is 10 pm seven days a week. Prior to graduation, the curfew is 12 am seven days a week.

Requirements for the first five levels include attending a minimum of four weekly 12-step meetings, being at the Tuesday night house meeting, obtaining a sponsor, and working the steps. During the final phase, clients attend three weekly 12-step meetings. Participation in relapse prevention groups, life skills coaching, and meditation/mindfulness is mandated.

Additionally, the men must commit to at least 30 weekly hours of participating in an Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP), going to work, performing community service or being in school. Residents who are under psychiatric care must attend their appointments. Random drug and alcohol screenings are conducted, and relapsed residents are immediately evicted from the premises. Stader is a Master’s-level professional counselor. Also on board are two other recovery specialists.

Extras

Weekend adventure program is provided, and clients learn how to experience fun in recovery. Other services include case management, job coaching and clinical counseling.

Next Step Recovery is a member of the Recovery Residences of the Carolinas.

In Summary

Next Step Recovery provides comprehensive sober living for a tight knit group of men. It’s a great choice for those who want to experience a strong sense of camaraderie, as they work on their inner selves, complete their steps and rebuild new lives.
