The Basics

Based out of Huntington Beach, California, Next Step Recovery is a behavioral health organization offering a range of services for men and women in early recovery. In addition to its flexible outpatient treatment plans, the organization also provides discreet sober living throughout the area.

Accommodations and Amenities

Altogether the organization has six homes for clients, four for men and two for women—with plans to expand in the near future. Though the layouts of each home may vary, each can host approximately nine residents. All the homes are clustered throughout Huntington Beach and are located close to the day treatment facility as well as to the beach. Both private and shared rooms are available, each with full beds (or larger), dressers, carpeting and shared closet space.

Though the houses vary somewhat, each includes shared living areas with cable TV, on-site laundry, spacious kitchens and on-site computers. Other amenities include outdoor areas with patios and barbecue areas, as well as game rooms with ping-pong, foosball and pool. One of the women’s homes also has kayaks on-site which can be used in the bay nearby during free time; one of the men’s facilities also features a large piano which residents can play.

Rules and Regulations

Because each client receives individualized treatment plans, the length and intensity of each sober living stay can vary. Still, the organization stresses a greater level of clinical involvement than some competing facilities in Orange County because of its intensive communication between clinical and house staff (including programs not offered through Next Step Recovery).

For clients who pursue treatment through the organization, days generally begin at 7 am with residents completing basic house chores and sometimes attending a morning 12-step meeting. Intensive Outpatient Programs (IOP) generally last from 11 am to 5 pm. Those not attending outpatient care must leave the house between those hours and work a job, seek employment, volunteer or attend further school. All participants must also attend five AA/NA meetings a week and remain active with their sponsors. For the first two weeks, all residents have a 9 pm curfew which becomes more lenient as the program goes on. Transportation and food cards are provided through residents are expected to prepare their own meals.

Extras

IOP and PHP can also be attended independently without the sober living component. Residents can also live in the sober living homes and attend outpatient through nearby treatment facilities with the help of Next Step Recovery’s staff. For clients in need of financial aid, the company also has a $10,000 scholarship they provide on a case-by-case basis which gets reloaded every month. Those in need of further aftercare planning can attend stepped down treatment or get referrals to nearby programs.

In Summary

Overall, Next Step Recovery is a multi-faceted organization which strives to be thorough resource for clients with addiction and dual diagnosis issues. While detox and intensive residential treatment are not available on-site, staff members can help provide referrals before placing anyone in sober living or an outpatient track. Each of the homes provides structured daily schedules and peaceful surroundings for recovery. For those in the north Orange County area looking for a safe, secure environment in early sobriety, Next Step Recovery’s sober living programs are a viable option.
